Acid Rain Experiment

Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. Neo vs. The Agents. Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney. All of these fights are great. My experiment: soil with a base vs. acid rain, who will reign? Acid rain affects plant growth, yet does adding a base to the soil combat the acid rain effects? In my experiment the two competitors will battle it out to see plant height, germination (the development of a plant), and pods produced. If I have three plants in soil with a bases 9, 11, and 14, then I predict the plant in the pot with the base 9 will show the best germination, plant height, and pods produced.

Acid rain occurs when air pollution affects our bodies of water, and the evaporated water is than precipitated down onto our plants, lakes, and buildings. Nitric acid and Sulfuric acid make up acid rain.On a pH scale acid rain is a, “4.0” (“pH Scale”), while compared to normal rain: “clean rain has a pH value of between 5.0 and 5.5” (“pH Scale”). A 7 on the scale is neutral and 0-6.9 is acidic while 8-14 is basic. When an acid is added to a base, and vice versa, the solution becomes neutralized. For a solution to be neutralized, the pH level would be within the range of 7: “A neutralization reaction is when an acid and a base react to form water…” (“Neutralization”). Soil usually is more acidic with a pH level of 5.5 to 7.5 (Colby). I will be using store bought soil because the soil in my area is more basic, and I have better control on the experiment. If the soil is not within this range, 5.5 to 7.5, plants growing may “have difficulty absorbing some nutrients and may be more susceptible to disease.” (Colby). Since everything in an ecosystem is a community, “If something harms one part of an ecosystem...it can have an impact on everything else” (“Effects of”). If plants are harmed, than the entire ecosystem is harmed. In my thinking, if I add bases to soil that

One group will be watered with acid rain and have a base with a pH of 9, baking soda, in the soil. The second group will be watered with acid rain and base with the pH of 11, a lower concentration of Lye, in the soil. The third group will be watered with acid rain and have a base with a pH of 14, Lye, in the soil. Finally, my last group will be watered with acid rain and have no base in the soil. My independent variable will be changing the base of the soils. My dependent variable would be how tall the bean plant grows, the number of pods, and germination. Some limitations of the experiment would include light, temperature, and watering schedule. Since the experiment will be taking place during the winter, I will be placing the plants under a grow light in my science classroom, and since the plants are in the classroom, the plants will be warmer inside the school than outside. The temperature will vary because the school is not as hot on weekends were as it is hotter on school days. Other limitations are the watering schedule. I would not be able to come in during weekends and longer breaks to water my plants. Also I will most likely have some bad seeds, to combat that, I will be planting multiple seeds in the pot with the same

The dependent variable would be the shells and what happened to the shells, if it breaks down. These three shells are different types than each other so they don't weigh the same amount. After the one week is up my partners helped me weigh all of the shells again, but first we have to wash and dry them so the excess amount of vinegar on the shells don't add weight to them. The shells are now washed and then put onto a scale, after 1 week cup one's shell now weighs 0.78g. The second cups shell now weighs 1.42g and last the third cup’s shell now weighs 0.45g.…

Acid, below-normal pH, causes many problems in our world today—from drinks to teeth, from pollution of industry to natural disasters. Acid is a chemical substance that can subdue alkalis, can dissolve specific metals and can turn them into salt, such as calcium, turns red on blue litmus paper, is corrosive or sour-tasting when it comes to liquid, generates pain in wounds, and turns colorless when placed in phenolphthalein which is used as a basic to acid indicator ("Definition of acid in English:"). Alkalis is any kind of substance that can produce OH ions, hydroxide ions, in water, which can also be known as 'basic', or 'basicity' ("GCSE CHEMISTRY - What is an Alkali? - What is a Base? - GCSE SCIENCE."). Litmus is a weakly acidic, organic…

Can you imagine a world with damaged ecosystems beyond return? “Acid rain is rain polluted by gases released in the air, by the burning of fossil fuels, like coal or oil.” In order to produce electricity, the former country of East Germany burned brown coal. This coal when burned releases sulfur dioxide into the air that then mixes with the air’s moisture. (Document A)…

Storm water runoff is generated from rain and snowmelt events that flow over land or surfaces, such as paved streets, parking lots, and building roof tops, and does not soak into the ground. The runoff picks up pollutants like trash, chemicals, oils, and dirt that can harm our rivers, streams, lakes, and coastal waters. Population growths are major contributors to the amount of pollutants in the runoff as well as the volume and rate of runoff from surfaces. Most of America’s waters are too polluted to swim or fish in (https://www.epa.gov/npdes/npdes-stormwater-program). Do you want to help save our rivers, streams, lakes, and coastal waters?…
