Acid, below-normal pH, causes many problems in our world today—from drinks to teeth, from pollution of industry to natural disasters. Acid is a chemical substance that can subdue alkalis, can dissolve specific metals and can turn them into salt, such as calcium, turns red on blue litmus paper, is corrosive or sour-tasting when it comes to liquid, generates pain in wounds, and turns colorless when placed in phenolphthalein which is used as a basic to acid indicator ("Definition of acid in English:"). Alkalis is any kind of substance that can produce OH ions, hydroxide ions, in water, which can also be known as 'basic', or 'basicity' ("GCSE CHEMISTRY - What is an Alkali? - What is a Base? - GCSE SCIENCE."). Acid rain is caused by certain pollutants in the air, and can also be caused by the burning fossil fuels such as coal-burning power plants, factories, and automobiles. Believe it or not, rotting vegetation and erupting volcanoes can cause acid rain too. Acid rain is a type of acid deposition, either wet deposition or dry deposition, meaning that the rain could appear in any form ("Acid Rain Facts, Acid Rain Information, Acid Rain Pictures, Acid Rain Effects - National Geographic"). Wet deposition is where acid rain is in the form of snowflakes, fog, and some other dry material that settles down on Earth ("Acid Rain Students Site: What is acid rain?"). Dry deposition is where the rain is in the form of gas and dust ("Acid Rain Students Site: What is acid rain?"). When acid rain falls on water, it causes the water to absorb the aluminum, turning the entire body of water acidic which then makes it's way to the soil and the streams where animals, marine and terrestrial, can get poisoned by the acidic water. On mountains, the acid can take effect on the trees which then won't be able to get enough water as the aluminum makes it's way underground and into the roots ("Acid Rain Facts, Acid Rain Information, Acid Rain Pictures, Acid Rain Effects - National Geographic"). When there is too many acidic food and drinks, and not enough alkaline food to buffer the acids, genetics are now included into the problem. Organs are made up of cells, and when the pH of fluid becomes imbalanced, then damage and dis-function can occur. Such as, diabetes, arthritis, joint pains, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, acne, and can also affect the eye sight ("How Acid Foods Can Damage The Body - Live Energized"). On the other hand, there are some acids that actually help and have an important role in the body. DNA, also known as deoxyribonucleic acid, is a sort of acid that contains the genetic code and hold the genes that tell the body how to produce certain proteins. Hydrochloric acid is another acid with an important role. It's a gastric juice that helps humans digest food. Lactic acid is a source of fuel for the mitochondria when the oxygen available in the muscles gradually decrease during laborious exercising, then prompting the cells to create lactic acid.
