Introduction:
The purpose of this experiment was to measure how much the pH changes when an individual adds a certain amount of acid or base to water, biological buffers, and other biological solutions. It is vital to study the changes in pH because a slight change in pH in an organism’s body can disrupt metabolism activities and even cause death. To accomplish the purpose of the experiment, an individual will add certain amounts of acid or base to water, biological buffers, or other biological solutions. pH is a measure to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a solution or substance (pH). A base is a water-soluble compound that reacts with acid (Base). Acid is a category of compounds that yields protons when dissolved in water (Acid). Biological means the genetic lineage (cells with a common ancestry that developed from the same type of identifiable immature cell) (Biological). A buffer is a solution that contains either a weak acid and conjugated base or a weak base and a conjugated acid to maintain the pH level (Buffer). A

The independent variable is the amount of base or acid added to the water, buffer, or juice.
2. The dependent variable is the pH level of the water, buffer, or juice.
For the 1st graph, water, cranberry, apple, and potato juice have a downwards trend which means that as the amount of acid added increases, the pH level decreases (Fig 1). For the sodium citrate, phosphate, and carbonate-bicarbonate buffer as the amount of acid added increases, the pH level maintains the same (Fig 1). For the 2nd graph, water and potato juice have an upwards trend which means that as the amount of base added increases, the pH level increases (Fig 2). The sodium citrate buffer and apple juice has a downwards trend because as the amount of base added increases, the pH level decreases (Fig 2). For the carbonate-bicarbonate, phosphate buffer, and cranberry juice, as the amount of base increases, the pH level maintains the same (Fig 2).
