Nannie Doss: An Ancient Mummy Curse?

Improved Essays
Doss got married three more times, and each husband wound up dying mysteriously. She even killed her third husband's mother, just after poisoning him and burning their house to the ground to keep it from going to his family. In between her fourth and fifth marriages, she moved in with her cancer-stricken sister and poisoned her, too, because why the hell not? "Might as well kill my own mother while I'm at it," she presumably thought, before doing exactly that. At this point, the authorities must have assumed that Nannie Doss was shrouded in some ancient mummy curse, because the only other explanation is that they were all terrible at their jobs. Doss finally got caught when she poisoned her fifth husband badly enough to send him to the hospital

Yes. Atticus asks why Scout's asking for a definition if she understood it well enough to make it the reason for a fight, and Scout says that it was the way Francis said it that got on her nerves. Atticus tells her that the term doesn't mean anything, but it's something "ignorant, trashy people use […] when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves" (11.107), and that even higher-class people use it sometimes when they want to put someone down.…

The Egyptians practiced the art of mummifying their dead for 3,000 years or more in the belief that the soul would be reunited with the body in the afterlife, so the body had to be kept intact. A mummy is a dead body in which some of the soft tissue has been preserved along with the bones. Usually this means it was specially embalmed or preserved for burial, but sometimes natural conditions alone freeze, dry out, or otherwise prevent the body from decaying by inhibiting the growth of microbes. The most carefully prepared Egyptian mummies date from about 1000 B.C., but the earliest ones discovered are much older. Sacred animals, such as cats and crocodiles, were also mummified.…
