I am writing this final Letter of Reflection to discuss my background in reading and writing about literature, my strengths and weaknesses in writing, changes I have noticed in my writing style, process, and abilities this semester, and why I have chosen to revise my Initiation Story, poem research paper, and essay on Death of a Salesman for my final portfolio.
While in high school, I took College Prep English courses as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. In those classes, I was required to read various forms of literature such as poems, plays, short stories, and novels. Some of my favorites were Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet, and The Pearl. I also wrote numerous essays analyzing different components of the literary works. As a senior, I took Dual Enrollment Composition 1 at Pellissippi State Community College. Examples of the assignments I was required to complete included argumentative, compare/contrast, observation, and rhetorical analysis essays.
When I analyze myself as a writer, I find many strengths, as well as weaknesses. I would say that some of my strengths in writing consist of grammar, vocabulary, stating a clear thesis, incorporating quotes smoothly, and making all of my ideas flow. Meanwhile, I believe my weaknesses include using the same words too frequently, being too wordy, and not having a strong conclusion. I am also not the type of writer who can write a paper in a short time period. I usually need a substantial amount of time to come up with …show more content…
The essay that I liked the least was the research paper on a poem. The poem I picked, “Let America Be America Again,” was very intriguing. However, the actual writing process and research was difficult, as I tried to find credible sources. Ironically, this is also the essay that I think helped me the most about writing, because I had to voice my own opinion and analysis of the poem, while also backing it up with other’s findings and
