My Personal Experience In The Field Of Social Work

Great Essays
I want to enter the field of social work to primarily help others and myself. The real answer as to “why” rests in my personal experiences. My family has been in a lower socioeconomic class for the majority of my life and I’ve also been a witness to drug use, gang activity, and domestic violence in my extended but close family remembers. I want to help these people who suffer negative effects from these events, but my biggest motivator has been my own mental health issues. Certain events in my life have caused me to suffer from multiple mild to severe mental health issues at a very young age with zero support from my family. I was not able to receive counseling until my first year of undergrad, and by that time my counselor felt that I was …show more content…
Now, I’m finding healthier ways to practice self-care. I am learning that I can rely on friends and I can make “that midnight call” in the event I feel that I can’t handle my stress or need to talk to someone at that time. I’ll also go out for a drive and listen to music that I like or is relaxing. I’ve also used social media to my advantage, and maintain a Tumblr blog where I express any fears, thoughts, or anxieties I may have almost meditatively to let those thoughts and emotions go. I also use that blog to find calming or humorous ideas, images or videos as well as similar experiences others have had. The greatest amount of stress I had at once was in the Fall of 2013. At that time, 5 of my family members died within 18 months and my best friend decided to cut me off abruptly on top of normal school stress. I spent a great deal of time talking with my friends, all of who provided amazing support, and I spent a lot of time writing on my blog whatever thought came to mind. The relief these things brought me was not sufficient, and I admitted myself to a mental health facility to receive the help I needed. After 10 days in the hospital, I was determined to stay on track to graduate on time, so I decided to drop only one class and finished the rest of the …show more content…
However, I feel as if I could always improve on my time management skills. If admitted to this program, I will actually be a home compared to living in the dorms with too many distractions going on. Also, the Columbia area does not cater to my interests as well as the Aiken/Augusta area did while I lived there, therefore fewer activities will be competing with my time to complete my work in addition to less people as I no longer have access to the connections I made while in the Aiken/Augusta area. I’ve also taken advantage of the Calendar and reminder apps on my phone to set a schedule of when assignments are due, or to incrementally complete larger assignments across a period of time. Such apps also help to complete assignments outside of the classroom to set a reminder to go to certain locations required for class at specified times as well as storing the address of the location and any other pertinent notes. In the past, I have also kept a physical list of tasks necessary to complete larger assignments, and I’ve also utilized my friends and classmates to attend “study parties” that created an environment to study, encouraged all who were there to complete tasks, and celebrate small victories when those tasks were

The Real Experiment Everyday we see different places, different people, and different situations. It is their factors, similarities, or differences that change different settings. I have recently switched campuses from Flint to Owosso and was surprised by the similarities and differences they both offered. For this experiment, comparing campuses would be a perfect candidate. The norms, deviance, social movements, and social control of the campuses.…

Career: Social work requires a different number of skills in which I believe I possess. Since my elementary school years, I have always had an interest in child development or anything child related because as my hobby I babysat. I remember at the end of junior year of high school; my parents pressured me about picking the college I wanted to attend. I applied to several colleges, but I wanted to closer to home so I chose the University of Mississippi. Prior to choosing this institution, I remember watching several great movies and that all shared something common.…

Throughout the past few years of my life, I've suffered from clinical depression. Freshman year, my formerly happy personality faded and was replaced with a bitter, sad one. I was so scared; I didn't understand why I was hurting so much or that it wasn't my fault. However, I felt that reaching out for help would be even scarier than facing what was going on in my mind. I felt my thoughts were so awful and different from everyone else’s that anyone I told would just look at me in disgust, reiterating what a terrible person…

I have chosen to enter the profession of social work because I want to help people who are suffering from mental illness and who are underserviced when it comes to getting help for mental illnesses. By working with a distressed person to become better, not only will I be able to enhance their life, but also the community will transform into a more positive place. I view transformation as a ripple effect, where changing the situation for one person eventually causes a change in the majority. This is especially true when it comes to mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I have been highly involved in mental health work on my college campus since my sophomore year.…

This research adds a great deal of knowledge to social work practice. The homeless population is one difficult to study, due to their unstable environment. The study shows that the homeless are attempting to reintegrate within the community, by volunteering and being involved. By volunteering, there are potential benefits such as job-related skills, building self-esteem, and giving back in service which will improve their overall well-being and situation. On behalf of the homeless, social workers should advocate for more service agencies that will allow homeless individuals opportunities, such as volunteering.…

Social work practicum is a vital part of social work education. Through experiential learning undergraduates learn how to integrate textbook theories, knowledge, skills, and values under the direct supervision of a professional social worker. The field practicum is where students gain a realistic understanding of what they have learned in the classroom and opportunities to uphold professional values and ethical codes of conduct.
