I decided to apply for the social work degree because after the past nine years I have encountered a lot of different experiences, problems and achievements. Through my adolescence years I faced many obstacles such as: my cousin going into care and witnessing alcohol and drug misuse. After these ordeals I realised from that point that I wanted to be the one to help young people overcome problems. I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young persons life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker.…
I love helping people the older I became it gets easier. I came to learn that social work is a profession devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment. With this knowledge I decided to go back to school so I can help my sub community by becoming a social worker to learn how help them with direct services. While working for a change to improve social conditions.…
Hi Verenice, I agree the that the major themes of the life course perspective are important to the social work practice because it is a framework for courses of life. As social worker we be knowledgeable about clients’ history. Through assessments we learn clients age, race, gender, culture, religion, educational background, work experience, marital status, and health issues. All of this information is important when considering the major themes and how they are vital to us as social workers. Knowing the clients’ past history, where and who they are in the present can help us empower them to be who what to be in the future.…
Why do you want to become a Social Worker? At first when people ask me that question my first instinct is to say “ because I want to help people.” Well that’s pretty obvious right? If I didn’t want to help people then why am I becoming a Social Worker? To answer the question why do I want to become social worker I have to look at it in a different way.…
The one constraint I can thank of that would restrict me in my adequacy of being a decent social worker would be for me to tackle too much obligation at one time. I should concentrate on what I can do to encourage and not attempt to save the world. I get myself overpowered on occasion due to this. I have a tendency to have numerous things going ahead without a moment's delay, rather than focusing on current workload and doing them well. One of my qualities that will offer me some assistance with being an awesome social worker is my willingness to listen.…
Although I am focused on mental health that is not the only thing I want to learn about or practice. I am interested in all aspects of social work, including the historical, cultural, economic, and political areas. There are always multiple factors that join together to create an individual’s disadvantage, and I hope to be able to learn ways to identify and improve those factors. I am happily awaiting to learn from Dr. Margaret Severson about mental health and psychopathology, and well as the impact of mental health from Dr. Amy Mendenhall. My hopes relate to my future plans as a social worker by giving me a well-rounded education of social work while being able to focus on my main area of interest, mental health.…
Whenever people use to ask me, “why do you want to be a social worker?” I would always reply with, “because I want to help people.” This then lead to the next infamous question, “well, what do social workers do?” and this was a question that stumped me. I always knew social workers were there to help other individuals in need…
Education is of ample value to me and I take it very seriously. Given the chance to further my education in social work is of great importance to me. My focus as an undergrad has always been with an eye toward graduate school and a career as a professional social worker. Having gained lifelong knowledge and skills for achieving my bachelors of social work, it is a necessity to continue learning as much as I can. Furthermore, I am looking for increased opportunities to learn the required skills to enable me to work with people supporting them and making a difference in their lives.…
I have always had a great interest in helping and working with others, as far back as I can remember. Having experienced personal problems at a young age made me have a deep perceptive beyond my years. My parents were teens and didn’t feel prepared to raise my siblings and me. As the second oldest I had to grow up fast with having the responsibility of being caretaker for my siblings. My childhood involved me with social workers that help me gain understanding of my brother who is Autistic.…
1. Discuss why you want to be a social worker. What personal, academic, volunteer and/or work experiences have influenced this choice? If you have worked in other fields, please discuss the reasons for this change. I like to believe that I did not choose the social work profession, in fact, social work chose me.…
Ever since I was little, I was aware that my brother Keng was physically unable to do things that everyone else in my family could. However, this aspect about my brother introduced me to the profession of social work. We always had a social worker come in and out of the house. I remember my mom telling me who they were and what they did. I respected their line of work and their ability to understand my family’s life situation.…
Personal Statement of Social Work Philosophy Autobiographical Sketch As a soldier, I was deployed three times. I probably should have gone to see some kind of counselor after my first deployment. I did not.…
Why I choose social work: Growing up I have always had a passion for helping others, although it was never clear what my career field would be. I debated on many different career opportunities from becoming a nurse, working in human resources, and everything in between. Unclear of my future career path, after high school, I began college at the University of South Carolina Sumter majoring in Early Childhood Education.…
My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
I have thought of my purpose for as long as I can remember, because when I was a kid I faced many difficulties. I cannot remember a time when my parents were not fighting, or a time when my dad was there when I needed him. When I was a kid, my parents went through a messy divorce, and shortly after that, my dad disappeared from my life. He lived only twenty minutes away, but whenever I had had an event those twenty minutes may have been on another planet. My mom stayed at home for the first seven years of my life, and dropped out of community college after two years, so it was difficult for her to find a job.…
