My Leadership Style Assessment

My leadership style assessment results were 8 (high) – concern for people and 4 (low) – concern for task. According to the assessment; task-orientation is concerned with getting the job done, while people-orientation focuses on group interactions and the needs of the individual members. The best leaders are ones that can balance their task / people orientation, which would equate a high score for both categories. My rating according to the assessment indicates that I’m overly laissez-faire. People are likely to be happy in their work but sometimes at the expense of productivity.
I have to disagree with this assessment, primarily with the task-orientation rating. I’m a very schedule driven person and I hate being late for a task, event, or appointment – just my personality and behavior. I will do whatever is necessary to ensure I meet my commitments and deadlines. I’ve always rate at the top level for my performance during my performance feedbacks and even have been praised for my accountability. So I’m surprised that I scored low in this area.
I started building and developing my leadership skills at a young age thru The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), earning my Eagle Scout Award with Bronze, Gold, and Silver Palms. In addition, I was elected and inducted into the National Honor

When looking at my leadership style now and thinking about what kind of leader I hope to be, I feel as though I definitely have some room for improvement. To get these traits in my group, I must be aware of my personal strong leadership practices as well as my weak ones in order to improve them. I’ve found that some of my strong leadership practices include, “fostering cooperative rather than competitive relationships among people I work with,” “praising people for a job well done,” “following through on promises and commitments I make in this organization,” and I “treat others with dignity and respect.” (Insights) Some of the practices I believe I need to improve on are, “keeping current on events and activities that might affect our organization,” “finding ways to get feedback on how my actions affect other people’s performance,” and “taking initiative in experimenting with the way we can do things in our organization.” (Insights) Self awareness is one of the best traits to have as a leader and realizing from these practices what I need to work on and what I do well will only make me that much stronger as a…

Leadership Self-Assessment Leadership opportunities present themselves in many ways. Throughout my career, I have assumed leadership roles by overseeing coworkers and training new employees in the intensive care unit (ICU). Supplementing the democratic style with a results-driven approach is essential to achieve the best results. As stated by Ulrich, Zenger, and Smallwood (1999), the value of a leader should be determined by results, not only by their qualities and characteristics.…

In order for me to become a more successful leader, I have to really focus on the feedback that I received from these assessments. Some of the Personal Inventory Assessments (PIA) were definitely surprising. For example, I assumed that my performance in some areas, such as being an effective team member, were acceptable; however, my results reflected room for improvement and THAT’S OK! Without feedback, there’s no learning (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). A good leader should be able to take feedback, whether it’s positive or negative, and learn from it.…
