Leadership Self-Assessment

Leadership Self-Assessment Leadership opportunities present themselves in many ways. Throughout my career, I have assumed leadership roles by overseeing coworkers and training new employees in the intensive care unit (ICU). My leadership style follows the democratic style because I value input from others before making decisions (Davis, 2018). Supplementing the democratic style with a results-driven approach is essential to achieve the best results. As stated by Ulrich, Zenger, and Smallwood (1999), the value of a leader should be determined by results, not only by their qualities and characteristics. While I consistently identify with one leadership style, weaknesses are present. Frequently, I show my frustration in the workplace when …show more content…
The five highest leadership skills are: outcome concern, information sharing, self-management, mobilizing others, and results focused. These demonstrate a tendency towards coaching with an emphasis on democratic, results-driven theories. Coaching is work-focused and relies on performance and achieving goals, which is consistent with my results-driven approach to leadership (Cleary & Horsfall, 2015). These theories are evident by means of open communication with colleagues regarding why decisions are made and how they may affect the group, as well as the desire for strong …show more content…
Among my lowest scoring traits is social awareness. To improve my ability of being mindful of how I portray myself to others, I will begin a journaling activity in which I document conflicts and frustrating encounters with peers. Journal writing allows for self-reflection on past experiences in order to find solutions to future problems (Walker, 2006). I will review the journal bi-weekly to assess opportunities for improvement. Another leadership development opportunity I will aim to improve is my ability to develop others. To develop others, I must first ensure I am a strong leader myself. Finding a mentor will improve this skill. A mentor will provide me with a long-term, interpersonal relationship with a colleague that I can use to further my own skills as a leader and anesthetist while learning how to help others grow and develop in the future (Cleary & Horsfall, 2015). Finally, I need to improve my ability to create a vision by clearly planning the goals for the future and communicating this vision with others. According to Johnson, Garrison, Hernez-Broome, Fleenor, and Steed (2012), goal setting creates a commitment to performance in order to achieve the end goal. It also allows leaders to set a clear path for themselves and others in order to help achieve success (Johnson et al., 2012). By writing down goals

As a leader, I needed to get results from others by providing a clear vision and guidance on what needed to be accomplished. Having a clear plan after we debated the pros and cons of each design we tested kept us on track. We all knew what we wanted the final product to look like but now we were faced with actually turning our design ideas into an actual working machine that could move an object the required 20 feet. It was very important that I build trust within my team. I did this by leading through example.…

By playing to my strengths, as well as recognizing my personal areas of improvement, I will be able to develop confidence as a leader. I aspire to become a role model for others who want to influence change, similar to how Craig Kielburger inspired me when I was younger. I am an RA at Northern Kentucky University. As an RA, I help students transition to college and help them understand how to live on their own away from parents. It is my duty to enforce University Housing policy- to ensure the safety of students plus maintain a positive learning environment. As an RA, I have developed a unique set of skills because I get to work with students to ensure they are receiving a full well rounded college experience while enforcing rules that some tend to break. This can be challenging because I still have to live with them unlike police; for example, they get to go home after they interact with someone so they don’t have to deal with it when their job is over.…

Global Leadership was an interesting course, as well as a bit of a revelation. Starting by taking the CQ Assessment, I realized I was not as ‘diverse’ as I thought. As I read the chapters, I found the amount of research behind Global Leadership is needed and beneficial for companies operating globally. Operating cross-culturally takes more than just opening shop in other countries; there are many facets of the culture to take into consideration to be successful. In addition, hiring leadership for these offices is not as simple as putting a warm body in an office.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…
