Abstract

This essay discusses my gifts and utilizing these talents in the service of others. The Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30, (2006) brings up an excellent point of not “burying” our gifts, but rather using them in the service of God. However, we must find a balance between work or family and using our gifts to help others. This is exemplified in the citation from Elizabeth Gaskell’s excerpt from The Life of Charlotte Brontë (2006) in which she describes Brontë’s effort to reconcile her duties between

You place yourself in their shoes and feel what they are feeling. Empathy is known to increase prosocial (helping) behaviors.”
Where am I using my gifts in service to others who are marginalized or disadvantaged? For some unknown reason, I realize I do have an ability to understand another person’s condition from his or her perspective. In His Parable of Talents (pp. 317-318), Jesus teaches we must use our gifts wisely and not bury them. In this case, the servants represent us and the master represents God. The lesson of this parable is that we should use our gifts in God’s service, otherwise God will consider us wicked as portrayed by the third servant in the parable. I understand when God gives me a talent or gift, He expects me to use it. Otherwise, if I do not use what God has given me, He will take it away and give it to somebody who will. This is worrisome to me, because this new label I have recently acquired puts me in a position where I feel I am obligated to use it in a formal setting and I am not quite sure I am ready to do so. I also understand the essence of Christianity is obeying and worshiping God and helping others. As pointed out in Jesus’ parable, regardless whether our gifts are great or small, we are required to put them to good use. The question then is how do I go about doing

However, a set volunteering schedule will most likely work the best for me since I am structure oriented. I recall reading somewhere that people who volunteered reported reduced stress, burnout and overall better mental health. Volunteering has also been associated with lower blood pressure, reduced feelings of loneliness and depression. You receive all these benefits from just volunteering!
My goal is to sit down during winter break and come up with a volunteer plan that will utilize my desire to help seniors. My guess is my stress levels will be reduced greatly by taking a small volunteering pill and at the same time feel good about myself all the while giving credit to God for my

Empathy — a concept learned in these Humanities classes — is described as looking through the eyes of another's soul. Just being in their shoes is not enough, you have to feel the same and think the same. Using this skill set with others can ultimately give you an inside look into this person which could help you in more than just the business world. As a teen, I wasn't emotional or rather was unsure on how to express them. When I entered my first high school English class we read Night by Elie Wiesel, the first book to give the urge for empathy.…

The first example of empathy I mentioned was the charitable act of a Mandeville priest. Rev. Tran saw that his friend was in pain and needed something that is very precious to a human being, a left kidney. His fellow priest would never ask him for a favor that great, but Rev. Tran was happy to do it. Through the entire process of tests and even the surgery, he was always very chipper and excited to help his friend. After the surgery, he felt so weak and he could barely get out of bed for three weeks.…

Imagine giving someone a coat, seeing a lonely stranger at the cafeteria, watching a loved one get emotional in the presence of death, and observing friends cry from laughter at Thanksgiving dinner. Each feeling that accompanies each situation is the result of the direct relationship between individuals—empathy. Whether empathy is used to cognitively breakdown a problem or share emotions with others, the importance of empathy is that it is prevalent in nearly all human interaction. Without it, effective communities, relationships, and even society itself could never form. Now, a recent study by Sarah H. Konrath has suggested a sharp decline in empathy levels within the past three decades.…

Empathy is the ability to connect one’s feelings, emotions, and pain with another. To view the world in someone else’s perspective, and not judge them for how they view it, but instead crawl inside the person’s heart and soul. “If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks.” To scout, is to explore and discover. If we all observe people’s perspectives and emotions, we’ll be able to intertwine our life with everyone else’s.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…
