I can vividly hear the mellifluous hum his throat is creating, along with the inhale and exhale of breath he takes next to me, the two sound mixing with the babbling rivulet not too far in front of us. An overwhelming sensation of a sort of serenity washes over me, like his breathing and the rushing water in front of us were entering me into an out of body trance. The tranquility of this entire setting was something I haven’t felt in quite some time, and I was grateful he thought to take me out here. A small smile appears on my face, and I look over to see his face craned in the air and his

The concept of being a mystic has been around for centuries. That is, “a person who claims to attain, or believes in the possibility of attaining insight into mysteries transcending ordinary human knowledge, as by direct communication with the divine or immediate intuition in a state of spiritual ecstasy” (Dictionary). This idea of mysticism is expressed in the novel Mariette in Ecstasy by Ron Hansen. While reading this novel, readers are forced to contemplate the question: is Mariette a fake or a real mystic? It can be decided that Mariette is in fact, a legit mystic due to the stigmata she experiences, the ecstasy she is overcome with, and the ever-growing relationship she has with God.…

I sat across from him, not daring to look up. I stared at my fishing pole, dipping it in and out of the water like a fish flopping in and out of the ocean. “Being a refugee is much more than political studies, it is the most pervasive kind of cruelty that can be exercised against a human being” Deadly silence swept through the night, dispensing uneasy tension and fear across the bombarded city of Daraa. Terror walked around our streets, loaded with heavy ammunition aiming their hatred towards innocent civilians. We did not dare to muster a single sound in our wooden creaky house, concealing ourselves from the danger within. In this town, a single sound meant a brutal slaughter of families and the innocent.…

Rough - Shock is a strange feeling. I find it’s best described by colors and sounds, not dissimilar to the way most things are described. If your life were a painting, would it have vibrant, spectacular colors swishing and swirling across the entire canvas, or would it have light pastels, boxed and cut into stacked, organized sections? Assuming that you will change, as all people do, (though maybe not at the same pace) do you think you’ll be able to recognize your own hues in 30 years?…
