Other than that, I was given the chance to work on their upcoming project, a cookbook that will be named “Recipes and Stories from Athena’s Kitchen”. This particular recipe book was important for the organization because it contained a variety of recipes from the women they aided. As well, this book will also include art work from past art auctions, information about the Shield, and stories about how women were capable of finding the strength to start a new chapter of their lives.
The idea of a multicultural cookbook stemmed from an activity that women and children engage in at the emergency Shelter. Every few months, the art therapist organizes an event called “Cooking Therapy Group”. Women who reside in the shelter get the opportunity

Immigration has always been a part of American culture, in fact, it is the basis of how our country was formed. Immigration, both legal and illegal, has become a key focal point in today’s society- especially with presidential elections looming in the near future. In a collection of essays titled “Reinventing the Melting Pot: The New Immigrant and What It Means to Be American,” Jamar Jacoby has a piece titled “The New Immigrants and the Issue of Assimilation” published in 2004. In her piece she creates an argument that although beneficial to our country, immigration has a pessimistic aura. She argues that immigrants from developing countries are entering the United States where many will be forced to spend their lives at the bottom of the economy, and where their assimilation feels forced.…

When reading ”Mobilizing culture, language, and educational practices, Fulfilling the promises of Mendez and Brown” by Moll, L (2010) it goes on to explain the landmark brown v. board of education (1954) involving the Mexican and Mexican American students who lived in California. The Méndez family brought this case in relation to brown and cultural aspects involving what was happing to education at that time. From the reading I did not know how important this case was to everyone but that the law allowed segregation to Asians and Native Americans and did not go into detail for Mexican children. I found it interesting that when Gonzalo asked for help from a Hispanic organization they refused but helped later on. All Gonzalo wanted was to Change the education for children of the future.…

To this day, America’s food culture remains to be its pride and joy, yet interestingly enough, what is understood by many to be the traditional food culture of America actually varies greatly from one part of the North American Continent to the other. However, of the vastly differentiating cultures found throughout America, one cannot deny that there is one region in particular who’s culinary culture is well defined, and easily recognizable. Actually, the entire region’s identity is nearly dependent on its distinct food culture; the American South. The south’s distinct and flavorful cuisine is admired throughout the nation and has become an important part of the average american’s diet. According to the HPBA, over 15,000,000 grills were sold…

Food often constructs one’s identity, and one consumes identity through food. Fred Wah expresses this idea through the biotext Diamond Grill, in which he uses food as a symbol to critique his struggles to embrace his Chinese identity while fitting into Western society. Through the biotext, food connects Wah with his family background and nostalgia; also, the author critiques the struggles to accept his Chinese identity and expresses his oppression of Chinese heritage through food. While working at the Diamond Grill, he is aware of the difficulties to adhere to and fit into Western society and the gap between the two generations and the racial groups in his society. Gradually, he finds his identity through cooking different dishes, and is able…

In Susan Okin’s book, “Is Multiculturalism Bad for Women”, the main argument lies in the idea women are endangered by certain group rights. She uses the example that in France, during the 1980s, male immigrants were allowed to practice polygamy even though many of the wives opposed it. Okin then proceeds with the idea that if the public agrees that women should not be put at a disadvantage because of their gender, then group rights that tolerate oppressive practices just because “they are fundamental to minority cultures whose existence may otherwise be threatened” should not be allowed. Thus, allowing polygamy creates tension between feminism and multicultural concern for protecting the diversity that exists within cultures. Overall, Okin’s view is that feminism and multiculturalism clash because it places certain danger on women.…
