Many leaders today are making the mistake of assuming that their team is only working for a monetary reward. Every type of person is motivated by different factors and our Military leaders need to recognize this and make an adjustment to how they approach incentives for their subordinates. Failure to address this issue will result in a lack of motivation in ship members, which then ultimately leads to poor performance of their duties and possibly resigning from the Navy.

• Consider work as a natural part of life and solve work problems imaginatively.
When it comes to a naval sailor’s life, it is safe to assume most people’s jobs involve specialized and incredibly repetitive work. Knowing this, leaders often tend to make the assumption that their people hate their job and so they tell them to work harder to get that pay bump. This is where an adjustment needs to be put in place.
Recommendation
For a change to occur there needs to be an overall modification in how leaders and managers perceive their employees. You need to ask what motivates them and what they want to accomplish in the future. If they are working just for monetary reasons then that’s one thing, but if they are there to develop their leadership skills and would rather have more flexible scheduling or sense of camaraderie than a pay increase, than you can try and accommodate. Without knowing your team there is a large disconnect that can create countless issues down the road. By implementing this modification the employees will undoubtedly be happier, which then translates to more diligent and effective work, which all leaders want to
