Mitochondria are an intracellular organelle essential for aerobic metabolism, and are critically relevant to energy homeostasis. Approximately 90% of cellular ATP production occurs during oxidative phosphorylation which takes place in the respiratory chain complexes located in the inner membrane (Romano, Greco et al. 2014). Mitochondria act as sensors in eukaryotic cells, acting to meet metabolic energy demands and energy balance. Regarding its role in aging, the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) leaks electrons during normal metabolic respiration which then generates ROS.
