In 2009, a show that would change the teenage tv show genre aired its pilot. Glee the first of its genre and the first of many other shows to come. Teenagers in the twenty-first century took a huge liking to shows that were either dramatic or comedic. Musical movies were making a boom in Hollywood. Jersey Shore is an American reality television series which originally run on MTV from December 3, 2009 until December 20, 2012 in the United States. The show follows the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at Jersey Shore, New Jersey. The morality of this show can be questioned since members usually behave like reckless teenagers. Certainly there is not underage drinking, but we have to question ourselves why is this behavior shown on air as normal and acceptable. Moreover, reality-show culture has boomed nowadays, rushing the degeneration and helping to create a society in which celebrities (known thanks to technology) are the new nobility.…

In “Friday Night Lights,” H.G. Bissinger states that a resident of the town stated that “Athletics last for such a short period of time. It ends for people. But while it lasts, it creates this make-believe world where normal rules don’t apply.” In other words, the hypocrisy of sports is that sports, particularly football in Odessa, represent an idealistic image of success and a prosperous future that wears off to a blunt image of a reality where there is little opportunity for the town economically, and even smaller opportunities for the athletes worshiped on the field. Sports often represent an overly idealistic opportunity for young athletes to escape poverty.…

The critically acclaimed show Freaks and Geeks is a shining example of a TV show that ended far too early. Freaks and Geeks was a show that captured the awkwardness of adolescence, as opposed to the romanticized and nostalgic view typically portrayed on TV. Shortly after Freaks and Geeks ended, a spiritual successor arose in the form of the show Undeclared, created by Judd Apatow, a producer of Freaks and Geeks. Where Freaks and Geeks was more drama than comedy, Undeclared was a lighthearted show that explored the college experience. Although Undeclared presents plots typical to the college experience, due to the lighthearted tone of the show, aspects of typical college life are presented too simplistically.…

I recently watched a show on YouTube that was on the channel TVFilthyFrank. The show was called “PIMP MY WHEELCHAIR”, this show seemed to be entirely made up of stereotypes that range from Blacks to being mentally challenged. I watched this show on the 8th of November and found the humor so controversial that it was funny. This show seemed to be made for people between the ages of 16-late twenties or thirties, mainly for people who aren’t afraid of controversial material.…

Previous research has found that television may negatively affect the body image of young women. Tiggerman and Pickering (1996) found that these effects did not just come from the amount of television viewed, but they could also come from the appearance-focused shows. Studies have shown that body dissatisfaction can be seen in girls as young as the age six years (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006; Tiggemann & Wilson-Barrett, 1998). This is what led researchers to come to the conclusion that the amount of time spent watching television is not to blame for this effect, instead, it is the type of television that is being watched. Since research shows that image insecurities can arise in young girls as young as the age of six, the blame is not to be placed…

Analysis of American Horror Story: Freak Show In class we have learned about many different aspects of disability. In American Horror Story: Freak Show (Freak Show), there were many themes shown throughout that touched on material we have talked about in class. Freak Show illustrates the medical and sociopolitical models of disability, uses terms that are deemed inappropriate or unacceptable by the disability community, and represents people with disabilities in the media. I have read several articles claiming the show to be a disgrace to those with disabilities, but each author of various articles claimed to have not watched even a full episode.…

In her essay “Getting Real With Reality TV,” Cynthia Frisby examines how Reality TV has became one of the most watched television programs. Frisby then discusses her beliefs that, while watching Reality TV programs, viewers tend to draw comparisons between themselves and the reality star. She then gathers a team of researchers who conduct surveys that ask simple questions about participants relationship with Reality TV, and the team performs a content analysis on these participants while they view certain Reality TV programs. Ultimately, she suggests that her research shows that almost all participants showed some type of comparison between themselves and the reality star. Throughout her essay, Frisby uses adequate amounts of evidence to support…
