With Dan and his friends falling into peer pressure, lying, cheating, deceiving and stealing they already find themselves in multiple messy situations. Add Gossip Girl, spilling the beans on every shady move committed by these high school students and one could understand how this TV series was an addictive pastime for the many teenagers who watched the series from start to…
The social and political system in the United States of America unquestionably revolves around white supremacy and misogyny. Many pop culture icons have attempted to make a change, but none have seemed to have done it quite like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The pop icon released her album, Lemonade, in April of 2016, which lyrically and visually shows themes of different social issues such as racism and the treatment of women. Beyoncé combines the two together and explicitly discusses the injustices faced among African-American women, which can be heard and seen in the visuals during songs like “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Freedom”. Beyoncé takes her personal life, expands it, and leads it into the illustration of the struggle black women face across the United States.…
The socio-cultural approach cites that “…the repetitive nature of key elements…” are the aspects that “…imbues a genre with social significance…”…

Popular culture and mass media has a large influence on our identities, behaviors, and interacts with people in society. Thousands of movies are made and watched throughout the globe, it is a form of entertainment that presents a bigger picture than most of us can capture. When we begin to analyze films using sociological theory, we are introduced to new themes, conflicts, and emotions that we do not originally notice. In this case, I will be analyzing a clip from the movie Mean Girls, one of the most popular films in mass media today, and use it to demonstrate how class conflict and dramaturgy occur. A well-known sociological theorist by the name of Karl Marx spent his time analyzing and understanding how class conflict arises.…
The critically acclaimed show Freaks and Geeks is a shining example of a TV show that ended far too early. Freaks and Geeks was a show that captured the awkwardness of adolescence, as opposed to the romanticized and nostalgic view typically portrayed on TV. Shortly after Freaks and Geeks ended, a spiritual successor arose in the form of the show Undeclared, created by Judd Apatow, a producer of Freaks and Geeks. Where Freaks and Geeks was more drama than comedy, Undeclared was a lighthearted show that explored the college experience. Although Undeclared presents plots typical to the college experience, due to the lighthearted tone of the show, aspects of typical college life are presented too simplistically.…
For many years, the famous television show Glee had been known for their diverse cultures and roles. There were roles ranging from Becky Jackson, a girl with Down’s Syndrome experiencing high school, to Tina Cohen-Chang, an Asian Goth who faked a stutter. But the utmost diverse role of all went to Artie Abrams, a paralyzed boy stuck in a wheelchair. Throughout the series, Glee showed the viewers the struggles Artie went through while in high school and how he overcame nearly all of them. In addition, Glee was a phenomenal series that showed the struggles handicap people went through everyday.…
1. The movie Mean Girls has its own unique high school culture and within that culture there are many social communities. People tend to divide into their own groups with others who share similar ideas and values and this was also true in my high school, but my high school differed by being more open and accepting different groups similar to the ending of the movie. Also, social communities also have their own rules for example the plastics wear pink on Wednesdays and this stays the same to this day. People are guided by rules to fit in whether its what they wear, do, say, or act.…
They are using hyper-sexualization as a way to show the differences in teens long ago and in teens today. Teens before were not as sexually-active as teens today. Most girls weren’t allowed to lose their virginity before marriage according to Christianity. However, today youths are having sex every chance they get. The writers are mocking youth today because the characters are giving the idea of sex more importance than the real issues like Jason Blossom’s death in Riverdale and the illegal party Score is having in Pop Kids.…
As someone who recently came out of the “teenage” demographic, one thing I can strongly relate to is the idea that there are few television shows that are applicable to the above demographic. Networks such as Family Channel, and MTV attempt to appeal to that age range, but often times fall short (in my personal opinion). Michele Byers studies television, specifically Canadian TV. She asks the question, “Why study Canadian TV?” and follows up with one reason that I feel, perfectly explains the lack of teenage appropriate television.…
Dawson’s Creek is an American television series that first began in 1998, created by Kevin Williamson who loosely based the show off of different aspect of his own life. The show follows Dawson, the main character, who is an aspiring film maker, his close friends Joey, Pacey and Jen, as well as the additional friends that come and go along the way. It depicts the four friends, living in a small coastal town, as they help each other cope with the struggles of both adolescence and growing up. The group endures a series of struggles that comes with life, as they mature and develop. They undergo the changes that accompany the growing hormones of puberty, as well as the confusion of feelings that come with these changes: they no longer see each other as just merely friends, but finally as members of the opposite sex.…
Gossip Girl is a television show produced by the CW, based off of a book series of the same name. It is an American teen drama set in New York Upper East Side and tells the story of privileged upper class young adults, as they battle sex, drugs, alcohol, relationships, and betrayal. The entire series is narrated by an infamous anonymous, who blogs the lives and drama of “Manhattan’s elite.” Many of the characters are frequently referred to as this, and as “Upper East Siders.” Gossip Girl has many of the problems seen in most television shows about high schools.…
Gilmore Girls: A Fan Culture Fan cultures offer more engagement and interaction with a particular narrative. People within the fan cultures of television shows often participate in gatherings such as “watch party” rituals as well as acts of ostension that allow them to interact more deeply with the narrative. Fan culture members often have collections of memorabilia, participate in fan conventions, participate in discussions about their feelings involving the particular thing they are a fan of, and sometimes even take terms from the shows they are a devoted fan of for use in their everyday lives.…
By reviewing the Pilot episode of American Horror Story I was able to explaining how the conventions of a Female Gothic sub-genre and the scenes tired in together and be seen as a Drama. This allowed me to convince the audience to consider watching the first episode of American Horror Story and try something new. Furthermore, adding suspense at the end of my review convinced them to continue watching the future episodes, regardless of their genre…
Many people watch these shows as well as teenagers television shows could also influence teenagers. In order to prevent scandals, privacy, and the audience from getting influenced by shows, reality television should be limited. Many television channels have dedicated their time on creating…
