Maud Flynn was at the Barbary Asylum for Female Orphans. The girls received word that a woman named Misses Hawthorne was going to adopt a small girl of eight or nine years old. Maud was quite disappointed as she was eleven years old. One day at school, Maud kept swinging her feet and was told to stop. She continued swinging them and it resulted to her being sent to the outhouse for punishment. Maud sang songs in the outhouse to keep warm and one day an elderly woman heard her. The lady asked her to come out and Maud said she was locked in. The lady opened the door for her. The lady’s name was Hyacinth Hawthorne. Judith was the lady’s sister. Maud quickly realized that this was the woman who wanted a girl of eight or nine years of age. Right there on the spot, Hyacinth told Maud that she was going home with her. The next step was to go to Miss Kitteridge’s office to approve the adoption. When Hyacinth told Miss Kitteridge she wanted to take Maud home. Miss Kitteridge told her that Maud was the most unpleasant and impolite child in the Asylum. So, it was settled, Hyacinth was to take her home. They went and got Maud a ready-made dress …show more content…
At dinner, they told her she would be taking the place of Caroline Lambert, the drowned child, Mrs. Lambert’s dead daughter. These women were into trickery, making people believe they are talking to their dead family members. They really are not, but Maud has to help them succeed at trying to do so. She will be participating in a séance. A séance is when a room is completely dark and you see and talk to a dead spirit. Mrs. Lambert offered any medium (a person who could talk to dead people) $5,000 if they could find a child comparable to Caroline. Maud was their only chance in paying off their mortgage and debt. Hyacinth and Judith were doing to see Mrs. Lambert at Cape Calypso while Victoria, Muffet, and Maud were staying
