It was a cold wintery day in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the home of Helen and John Piela. Helen was very pregnant with her first child, and she couldn’t wait for her baby to come. On December 27th, 1937, Helen had her little baby boy, he was given his name, John David Anthony Piela, after his father. Helen’s first child, she was both excited and scared. John grew up as a happy child in a big house filled with loving parents. When John was four Helen had her second baby, a little baby boy John and Helen named him Gerry. John was excited to have a little brother to play with.

The end of this World War will be something he will never forget. When John was nine, Helen had her third baby, a girl they named Sue. John’s face lit up with excitement for his new little sister to mess around with. Sue and John always gave each other a hard time, John would sometimes pull on Sue’s toe and she didn’t like that.
In eighth grade John had his confirmation which is a ritual at the Catholic Church where the candidate gets fully realized into the church. The candidate has to choose a saint to have be their role model in life and John chose Saint Anthony. That saint's name will be your middle name along with the one your parents gave to you. So John’s name would be John David Anthony Piela.
In 1951, the 22nd Amendment, prohibiting more than two presidential terms in office was put into place, when John was fourteen years old . John went to Catholic Central High School, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When John was fifteen his parents had their last child, a daughter they named “Arline”. Even though John was excited for a new sister, but since he was older this meant that he had to help out more. John had to babysit and clean the house, his parents didn’t have time because they were busy with their new baby. John usually went through high school with a smile even though he had the usual struggles of a high schooler. He did have trouble with grades and friend dramas, but he was happy most of the
