In stage one, it didn’t occur until closer to the end of the movie for Mason, but it occurred earlier for Samantha. They cleared the task in this stage more easily than the previous task and once they distanced themselves from their mother and her relationships, it allowed for their autonomy to develop and flourish into having relationships with other people and in Mason’s case, he managed to graduate from high school with a stable job. At one point in the movie, he did have an intimate relationship that appeared to last some time, possibly a year, but ended around the time of graduation. Not many derailments were apparent during this transition phase, possible post-divorce from his mother’s last relationship, but if he was troubled by it, it wasn’t too apparent. I believe this stage was most formative for him because we were able to see his experiences through early childhood, we were able to see his maintained relationship with his sister, mother, biological father, and we were able to see how he processed the effects of derailment of his mother’s divorces. In stage one, it was towards the end of the movie, but we did see a few task get complete by Mason as he was entering into college life and into his new dorm. For stage three, it wasn’t possible to use Mason, but I felt his mother was the best example to use since she would repeatedly complete the life cycle task and then shortly after face derailment. I felt Mason’s mother played a significant role in his development through the stages since she made the most prominent changes in her life, such as moving to a new city, changing careers, and introducing new partners into their family
