Aims to bring about a classless society, Marxism, as a materialist philosophy, tries to explain things without assuming supernatural power’s existence, and sees the struggle between the powers of varied social classes. The nature of literature is influenced by the circumstances in which it is produced. When Marxism Approaches is used in Literature, the historical truth may not be shown; however, the underlying ideology can be revealed.

Base stands for the production, distribution and exchange, is the sum of forces and production relations which decided by productivities. And the superstructure resembles the ‘cultural’ world: ideas, art, political powers, institutions and so on; furthermore, the tool that one social class uses to control another. This model can help us better understanding the differences between characters and their motives. In The Yellow Wall Paper, the narrator is believed to be attacked by temporary nervous depression after parturition; thus, she is forced to take a rest in a haunted house, apartheid from any congenial work. However, only when the narrator’s family can afford her inoperation and realized the positive impact of rest cure, will there be possibilities for the narrator to accept a long-time cure, and make use of workers to help her bringing the child. For most working class women at that time, because of their poor economic situation, they would be forced to work instantly after parturition. The writer’s social class and dominant ideology greatly influence or even limits the literary values. Though the nature of literature is influenced by the social and political circumstances in which it is composed (Barry 166), the content (setting, descriptions) is loyal to the time, but the form (more abstract features) can vary a lot; the writers’ restriction within their own perspectives also contributes a lot to the formation of work, which they may not admit. Is the work really reveals the conflicts between social classes? That become what needs our concerning.
