Marijuana for the sole purposes of “fun” and “pleasure” should remain illegal for the detrimental effects it has from the acute to long-term usage of marijuana on one’s health and well being. In the article “Marijuana is Harmful” written by Stephen P. Thompson, he lists the consequences of marijuana use just present while intoxicated which includes: impairment of short-term memory, attention, judgment, and other cognitive functions, coordination, balance, increased heart rate, and psychotic episodes. Furthermore, Thompson adds continuing effects of marijuana far after intoxication, including sleep depravation and impaired learning skills. The aforementioned consequences of marijuana outweigh the short lived pleasures in the long term scenario.
