The MTBE operation consists of various units; the focal units are De Iso Butanizer (DIB), Butamer, Oleflex and Ethermax. Methanol produced from QAFAC, mixed butane from QP NGL facilities and water with power from KAHRAMAA and small amounts of chemicals to be used such as: 10% Caustic, DMDS, PERC and Chlorine are the required raw materials needed to generate MTBE. Producing MTBE starts with passing the Butane mixture that is in the storage sphere at QAFAC through the DIB unit where the separation of Isobutane, Normal butane and heavy hydrocarbons occurs. The separated Normal butane is treated by removing the moisture, sulfur and other contaminates that negatively affects the catalyst. Then it passes through Butamer to generate a great amount …show more content…
It is a dehydrogenation unit that used to convert isobutane produced from the Butamer to a new compound that is Isobutylene. One of the vital points that must be considered is the feed, which enters this unit. The feed gas must be free of impurities that damage the platinum catalyst. Producing Isobutylene is summarized in the following stages. At the beginning, the isobutane that fed to the Oleflex unit is stored in Isobutane Sphere (V3103). V3103 is a pressurized storage to store Isobutane and to make sure that the operation of dehydrogenation is continuous. Then the regeneration receivers (V2215 A/ B) receives Isobutane from DIB overhead product pump (P-2101 A/B) and from V3103. However, both lines join and bring together to the fresh feed dries. The outlet feed stream from V2215 A/ B is routed to the filters (F2203 A/ B) to ensure that the feed stream supplied to the cold box is clean from dust and moisture. Isobutane that leaves the filters enters the cold box to produce a fresh stream of Isobutylene (C4H8) and Hydrogen (H2) rich recycle gas as shown in Equation (4). Finally, C4H8 and H2 pass through Hot Combine Feed Exchanger (E2201 A/ B) to be heated up before entering the three reactors that are connected in parallel (R-2201, R-2202, R-2203); Whereas the isobutane is converted into isobutylene by using the catalyst inside the three reactors. The percentage of the Isobutane that converted to Isobutylene …show more content…
The purpose of this stage is mixing the generated Isobutylene that comes from the Oleflex unit with the excess amount of methanol manufactured by QAFAC to produce MTBE. Two isobutylene spheres (V 3101, V 3102) are designed to store 2,400 m3 other than storing requirements. These spheres can receive isobutylene after shutdown in the downstream and they are continuously charge and receive Isobutylene in initial startup and normal shutdown. The feed passes through highly acidic ion exchange (V 2302), low temperature and relatively high pressure, these conditions are required to mix Isobutylene with methanol to produce MTBE. MX 2301 is the Mixer in this stage of the process that mixes isobutylene that comes from (V 3101, V 3102) with Methanol from Methanol drum (V 2303). Next, Isobutylene and Methanol reacted in reactor (R 2301) to produce 95% of MTBE at a pressure that equals 3400 kpagauge and temperature of 120o C. In addition, butane column (V 2304) is available and it has two objectives, which are reaching 98% to 99% of MTBE production and distillation of MTBE from other components such as Methanol and unreacted isobutylene. MTBE transferred to the storage tanks and the other compounds go to Water wash column (V 2306). V 2306 is the next column that extracts Methanol from the mixture of Methanol and unreacted Isobutylene. Extraction process occurred by

The results provide information that both simple and fractional distillation did separate toluene and cyclohexane but the experiment-lacked accuracy especially for fractional distillation, concluding that simple distillation did a better job. In simple distillation fraction 1 and 2 showed small indications of toluene that were distilled with cyclohexane but the results for fractional distillation indicated larger amounts of toluene presented then simple distillation did for fraction 1. While in the fourth fraction; simple and fractional distillation presented there was a larger percent of toluene; which is what should’ve been seen.…

Dehydration is known as the process of removing water. During chemical dehydration covalent sigma bonds are broken into a hydroxyl group and a covalent sigma bond is broken to a hydrogen on an adjacent atom. A covalent pi bond forms between the two atoms on which the OH and H are bound and therefore chemical dehydration forms a new water molecule along with a new double bond. In this experiment 2-methycyclohexanol will react with phosphoric acid, the phosphoric acid will act as a catalyze.…

There has long been a need to develop a more efficient way to upgrade the vacuum residue in crude oil to high quality transportation fuels without producing undesirable low value byproducts such as delayed coke. The combination of Chevron Lummus Global’s (CLG’s) RDS with RFCC has been an attractive alternative to delayed coking for full conversion of residue in cases where gasoline production is favored. In other cases, CLG’s LC-FINING or LC-MAX processes have provided a better option where middle distillate is needed and where feedstocks are heavier. However, both of these processes generate an unconverted bottom stream that must have a downstream processing outlet (such as delayed coking, burning, gasification, fuel oil, etc.).…

Multiple trials were done with different percentages of Oxygen and Acetylene in order to find out which ratio would provide the most propulsion and therefore create the most distance traveled for the rocket. In this lab, it is assumed that the furthest rocket launch would indicate the best ratio of Oxygen to Acetylene gas in the pipet bulb. In order to have a reaction between Oxygen and Acetylene gas, Acetylene gas must be created. To create pure Acetylene gas, this reaction takes place: CaC_(2(s))+〖2H_2 O〗_((l))…

Fractional distillation is a common method for separating components of a mixture by utilizing their boiling points to aid in the separation. As a mixture is heated, the component with the lower boiling point in the mixture vaporize, while the higher boiling point component will remain in solution. These vapors will rise to a cooler area where they will condense and this liquid will then be collected; this is known as the distillate. Eventually, the lower boiling component will boil off, and the higher boiling point component will begin to travel up into the condenser as the temperature reaches the boiling point of the second component. As the second distillate is collected, it will mostly contain the higher-boiling component.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…

Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to understand acid-catalyzed hydration of alkenes through the formation of exo-norborneol from the reaction of Norborene with acid and the excess of water. Acid-catalyzed hydration is useful in removing double and triple bonds; an unsaturated compound becomes reduced to a saturated compound in the presence of the acid catalyst, or water for this experiment. Hydration of alkenes is the result of acid-catalyzed addition of water to a carbon-carbon double bond. This leads to the formation of an alcohol.…

As this condensate mixes with rising vapor and as the cycle undergoes, the vapor that rises should contain increasing amounts of this more volatile liquid. Therefore, leaving the less volatile liquid in the distillation flask. The temperature will not rise at the thermometer while the more volatile liquid is being fractioned because the main vapor that reaches this portion of the column should consist mainly of the lower boiling point liquid which should remain consistent until the vapor composition begins to change to that of the high boiling point liquid. Finally, once all of the more volatile liquid has been fractioned, the temperature will increase to that of the boiling point of the lower volatile liquid and the vapor that rises should primarily consist of the…
