Leadership is a process of social influence which maximizes the efforts of others toward the achievement of a greater good. A group of boys become stranded on a desert island and fight for their survival and the greater good in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph is elected as their chief, and Jack is put in charge of the hunters. Piggy, who represents the boys’ voice of reason, thinks that Ralph is the better leader. Most of everybody else thinks that Jack is the better leader. There are many qualities and characteristics that differentiate a valuable leader from a lousy one and Ralph has the better of the qualities.
