Being a leader is glorified. Leaders are thought to be mighty and powerful although this holds true it is not always rainbows and butterflies. Leaders are ridiculed and have to make tough decisions. Betrayal is someone you trust turning on you. Leaders have followers. These followers put their trust into said leaders. In movies and history, leaders repeatedly betray their followers. Alienation is when somebody is separated from everyone else in a group. Leaders often separate or confine themselves to avoid contact with people unlike them. Throughout history, this has been proven true. Jim Jones was a leader of a settlement called Jonestown. He was also the person behind the Jonestown Massacre. Jim Jones shows the characteristic of being a leader.

Protagonist Holden alienates himself from society because he fears judgment. Jones also alienated himself from society when he moved his community to Guyana. Unlike Holden, Jones not only alienates himself he alienated his entire community and all of his followers. Jones moved his community to the middle of nowhere. In the article, it said, “Third thing he would do is drown out the voice of outsiders. His purpose was to alienate the followers from outsiders, family and the media” (Brown). Jones purposely choose a remote location for his community so not outside source influenced his followers. This way Jones had complete control over them.
