“When Texas got their independence from Mexico in 1836, they wanted to join the U.S. However, they wouldn’t become a state for almost a decade. There were a few reasons they had to wait so long . One reason was slavery. There had been a balance between free and slave states, and if they added texas, the balance would be unset. After Texas went independant, They joined the United States. The war was a territory grab by the U.S. Although President James Knox Polk made sure that the Mexicans shot first, by purposefully placing American troops in contested territory. In the 1844 campaign President Polk did not promise he would not seize California from Mexico with force, as his major mission was to Expand the U.S., as the major plank of his platform was U.S. expansion across the continent. Also, Polk had also called for the annexation of all of the Oregon country, which was also claimed by Britain and Russia. One of his campaign slogans had been "54-40 or fight!", referring to the northern boundary of the Oregon territory. In the end, the U.S. and Britain compromised, with the U.S. taking the parts of Oregon that now comprise the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington, while Britain took what is now the Canadian province of British Columbia, while Russia kept the edge of Alaska. This was probably because America was scared of Britain more than
