1. In the Tedtalk given by Dan Gilbert, he talks about lottery winners and paraplegics and asks the audience which one we would prefer? He did this because most people would just assume that the lottery winners would naturally be happier. His point, however, was that despite what most would think, lottery winners were not much happier than their control group and both the lottery winners and control group were only slightly happier than paraplegics. 2. Impact bias is when we overestimate the amount of time and intensity of current feelings and future feeling states. We have a tendency to miscalculate of strongly we feel about an emotional state and how it will impact us. It applies to both negative and positive situations.
3. We are happier after making decisions that are irreversible. In his Tedtalk, Dan Gilbert gave the example of telling a group college students that they could keep only one of the pictures they photographed that day (out of two) and the other would be shipped out and never seen/held by them again. On the other hand, they told another group of students that they could mule over which print they wanted to keep. They could take one home and return it in the next couple of days if they decided to change their mind. The group that had to chose right away and live with their decision were more happy with their photograph overall compared to those who had the time to think about which one they liked
