The now 74-year-old was born on the 2nd of March, 1942 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He’s an American citizen who was actually born by the name John Wallace Blunt Jr.
He lived with his mother and stepfather as a kid and used to join wrestling competitions at his school. He would eventually keep on wrestling for at least 20 years, as a youngster and as a coach.

Only a year would have passed when he published his first novel, Setting Free the Bears. Many novels would follow and he has, nowadays, been nominated for a National Book Award a total of three times. He won in 1980 with his novel The World According to Garp.
In 1981 he found out that his biological father had fought in the second world war and had been in an accident over Burma. It is an incident that must have struck him quite highly as he would later on use it as a reference in The Cider House Rules.
It was in 1985 that he released The Cider House Rules who became soon after a bestseller. He eventually turned the book into a film which got released in 1999. The film pulled 7 Oscar nominations. John Irving won the one for Best Adapted Screenplay and one of the actors won one too.
During this time he kept writing and publishing books who all turned into bestsellers and handled heavy topics, such as abortion, sexuality, feminism, etc.
Only a year ago he published his newest novel who got well received by the critics and now he’s doing a promo tour. He has had great success with a lot of his novels, some of whom have been released in thirty-five
