Motivation
Upton Sinclair was motivated by many things throughout his life and it influenced his life greatly. For example, he worked hard to pay for his education. “To finance his undergraduate education he wrote jokes, stories, and juvenile dime novels” (“Upton Sinclair,”2008). This shows that he was motivated to generate money so that he could get a degree. Secondly, he worked to gain attention. “While living in near destitution with his wife and child, he published three sentimental novels, which brought him scant critical or popular attention” (“Upton Sinclair,”2008). He published The Jungle in 1906. “The publication of The Jungle awakened the American public to the dangerous practices of an unregulated food industry”(“Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr.,”2008). This is an example of one of his accomplishments that improved life in the United States. This led to the creation of the Pure Food and Drug Act and also the Meat Inspection Act in 1906. These laws ensured that food was safe for consumption and met sanitation standards.
