Unknown to most, Coltrane actually knew how to play trumpet and clarinet along with his saxophone. He had a kind heart and was known for his positive outlook on life (Kelley). “Coltrane felt we must all make a conscious effort to effect positive change in the world, and that his music was an instrument to create positive thought patterns in the minds of people” (John Coltrane Biography 1). He wanted the world to be the best place that it could be, so he always tried to help out anyone in anyway possible. He encouraged others to do the same as well. Anyone who knew him, knew just how kind and gentle the soul of John Coltrane was. Coltrane said, “my goal is to live the truly religious life, and express it in my music. A tone that Billie Holiday conveyed so freely. Of course, everyone loved jazz singers like Louis Armstrong, but every now and then, people wanted something a bit more soothing, rather than the rash tone of some of the male jazz singers’ voices. “‘Lady Day’ was perhaps the most exceptional popular music singer of the 20th century. She wrote few songs; but when she sang, she took on a deep, personal and intimate approach” (Listverse). Billie was energetic, young, and new. Everyone loved her voice even though she had no vocal or musical training, unlike so many of the other famous jazz musicians in her time period. She was known for her ability to get emotional and personal with her songs. “Her recording of the song “Strange Fruit” is considered one of the most important songs in history, because of it’s powerful theme and topic, and because of Holiday’s powerful performance” (Listverse). “Strange Fruit” is a song about slavery and what it was like in that time period still facing racism. The Strange fruit that was on these trees were African Americans who fell victims of the cruelty that was present at that time in history.
