Teenagers shifted from rock and roll to rap as the newest popular genre of music amongst teens. "Old school rap music began to be recorded commercially in 1979, and by 1986, rap's "new school" had exploded into the musical mainstream"(Rap and Hip Hop Update). Rap was very commonly mixed with styles such as rhythm and blues and jazz. East and West coast rappers often had disputes and strong rivalries against each other, while competing against each other in the music industry. At the time, the "dominant template for the making of rap music in the south was (Outkast, Petey Pable, and others in the wake of Miami's 2 live Crew), the west (N.W.A., Ice T, Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, Snoop Doggy/Dog, and Tupac), and the Northeast (the Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, and later 50 cent)"(Hip Hop). The different styles of rap included neo soul (hip-hop/soul music), rap rock, rap metal, and rapcore (hip-hop/rock/heavy metal/hardcore punk music). As rap became more popular, rappers moved from the music industry into other areas like acting. Even with the popularity of rap music, some still thought that the violent lyrics in rap and hip-hop have been blamed for inciting violence. Others argue that rap and hip hop bring up issues that already exist in society.
Jazz music stems from both African American and European American influences. In New Orleans, African Americans would sing, dance, and play the drums at Congo Square.
