Jerome And Esme: A Short Story

When arriving at the door the doorman tells them they cannot take the elevator because they are no longer “in” forcing them to take the stairs. Jerome and Esme are their new guardians who focus on what’s in, out, and money. Esme claimed that Olaf was “out’ so the doorman would not let him in. They claimed that orphans are the new trend so that’s why they agreed to take care of them. They live in a 71 bedroom apartment but they toy room doesn’t have chewable toys, the tool room doesn’t have tools, and the library only has what’s “in.”
Shortly after arriving they are informed that lights are “in” so they can open the windows. Jerome wants the kids to be happy but Esme could care less. They are given pin stripped suits since they are “in.” Shortly they are approached by Olaf (Gunther) who claims to be an auctioneer. The kids refuse to call him Gunther causing Esme to become angry. Jerome is forced to take the kids out to eat. While there the Baudelaire’s try to tell

While waiting Klaus discovered a secret door but did not tell the other siblings until later when Esme and Jerome returned and they were up in their room. The Baudelaire’s decided to go back down to the secret door where they discover the Quagmires are hidden. They make plans to come back and break them out of the cage and run away together. When the Baudelaire’s return the Quagmires were gone. Upset they returned to their room where they discovered an auction catalog with a mystery box labeled V.F.D. Lot #50 and they figured it was Olaf’s way of hiding the orphans and selling them. They decided to tell Esme who agrees to help but when leaving to go to the auction she pushes them down the empty elevator in the dark.
