Their sense of self is benefited from this ownership because professional athletes are simply doing something they themselves know they are extremely good at. To add on, their skills also benefit others as well. Since professional athletes take part of teams, they give people something to be passionate about. When people are passionate about something, a team in particular, they tend to purchase anything that has its logo such as clothes, backpacks, phone cases, and even cupcakes. Back in the day, cellphones were strictly for calling only. Now, they are advanced technological blocks that have more uses than just calling. However, parents tend to use them as a way in which their kids can show them that they are responsible enough to own a phone. By owning something the child had desired of having in their hands for a long time and have worked hard for it, the child learns to value what they are given. Displaying responsibility is a great way of showing how ownership positively affects someone's sense of self.
