While some people view ownership as something bad, others tend to believe that it is good to own. Before establishing and opinion on whether ownership is good or bad, people need to understand how ownership and sense of self relate. With that being said, ownership and sense of self are undeniably intertwined. For instance, professional athletes such as the ones in the NBA, NFL, and MLB. By owning the certain skills that got them drafted in the first place, these professional players benefit because they get paid a grand amount of money for every game they play. Their sense of self is benefited from this ownership because professional athletes are simply doing something they themselves know they are extremely good at. To add on, their skills also benefit others as well. Since professional athletes take part of teams, they give people something to be passionate about. When people are passionate about something, a team in particular, they tend to purchase anything that has its logo such as clothes, backpacks, phone cases, and even cupcakes. As people buy more and more, they contribute to improving the economy. This demonstrates not only how owning something is good for somebody's sense of self and others …show more content…
Back in the day, cellphones were strictly for calling only. Now, they are advanced technological blocks that have more uses than just calling. However, parents tend to use them as a way in which their kids can show them that they are responsible enough to own a phone. By owning something the child had desired of having in their hands for a long time and have worked hard for it, the child learns to value what they are given. Displaying responsibility is a great way of showing how ownership positively affects someone's sense of self.
On the contrary, some people may argue that owning something is detrimental to their moral character. They believe that owning something gets to people's head making them greedy, selfish, and making them think they are above society. However, ownership actually benefits your moral values, not distort them. Ownership doesn't only make you more responsible, but also trustworthy. It makes you trustworthy because when parents see that you are responsible they begin to trust you more when they allow you to go out with friends. Thus supporting the idea that ownership benefits people's sense of self, not detriments

Ownership There may be many different kinds of ownership and sense of self, but to own something personal or valuable, you have to have virtues. As I defend Plato’s argument of owning objects is detrimental to a person’s character and Jean-Paul Sartre proposes that ownership extends beyond objects to include intangible things as well with the meanings of ownership. In addition to Plato’s argument, it means that if they lost that object, it may be harmful to who they are.…

De Soto, argues that property rights give entrepreneurs the opportunity to tap into the potential of the asset to create capital. The owner of an asset might not have the means to convert the asset into its full potential/value/income, but it can partner with another party to receive compensation for the asset, use the asset to the best of their ability, or combine resources/partner with another party. The economic purpose of valuation is for members of the economy to develop an understanding of what an asset is worth. Property rights and documentation provide a record and a history for assets and transactions. This gives money prices more stability, which helps grow and sustain an…

in my point of view the conception of ownership is well explained by all three philosophers. Plato argues that owning objects is detrimental to a person’s character, meaning that what kind of person are you. I completely agree with this statement because in this era people likely to be acquisitive because it tag them as character who may perhaps be better off than someone else. People likely to think especially of themselves when they have acquisitive item to support them. For example having the new…

Humans gain ownership of intangible items everyday, so how does that affect a person’s development of self identity? If a person owns something intangible, that person will feel more powerful because ownership of knowledge equates to power. If a person has a lot of knowledge, than that person has a large amount power. For example, in the 1900s people gained ownership of the idea that the Aryan race was the “master race.” People who read “Mein Kamph” by Adolf Hitler gained this knowledge.…

Argument Essay During the Great Depression people did not have the money to afford fancy, useless objects. They had to save their money for absolute necessities, and they knew that their possessions would not make them better than anybody else. Plato, an Ancient Greek philosopher, argued that objects can destroy a person's character. Jean-Paul Satre, a twentieth-century philosopher, argued that ownership does not just stop at physical objects, also includes skills and talents. I agree with both Plato and Satre.…

Ownership can be defined in a number of ways. Some regard ownership in terms of things are tangible, such as a house or a car, while others adopt a broader definition of ownership that encompasses internal as well as external traits, such as knowledge of a subject or self-understanding. Given the ephemeral nature of tangible items, self-identity is more accurately expressed through the unique qualities people have and how they use them in order to better themselves and the world around them. In the movie Legally Blonde, main character Elle Woods seems to have it all: looks, money, popularity, and what seems like the perfect relationship.…

The term ownership applies to both the physical possessions as well as one's abstract possessions such as ideas, opinions, memories and knowledge. Jean-Paul Sartre a twentieth century philosopher proposed that ownership extends beyond objects to include intangible things as well. It's possible to physically own a house with documented evidence just as it's possible to own an idea or memory unique to a specific person. Physical evidence of ownership is not the only type of ownership, to own simply means to possess something whether it be physical or intellectual the only necessary measuring stick is whether it has been part of oneself. An example of this is that I own the book “Animal Farm” by George Orwell.…

If a friend and I were walking on the beach, and we found a ring, phone, and five hundred dollars, I would suggest we try to find the owners of them. I might want what my neighbor has, but I should not just take it because I have a desire for it. This is stepping over a moral boundary and creates conflict within communities or societies of humans. Another desire could be sexuality, but unlike taking something that does not belong to you, this one probably should not be suppressed.
