POST-LAB: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
1. Write a brief summary of your experiment.
The experiment was conducted by creating a K3Fe(C2O4)33H2O solution using DI water, 3.501 g of iron (II) ammonium sulfate, H2C2O, K2C2O4, and H2O2. 5 ml of ethanol was dispensed within the solution to aid in the crystallization of the oxalate. The results of the experiment did not provided crystals of the oxalate rather crystals of impurities formed within the solution with 5 mL.
2. Write the balanced chemical equation for each step in which you observed a color change. Below your equation, indicate the color of the products and color of the reactants. Note: You are not asked for the color of each reactant and each product; just write the color observed before the reaction and the color observed after the reaction. If you observed transient color changes during the reaction (colored reaction intermediates), write these colors under the reaction arrow. All colored species in this experiment contain iron. …show more content…
3. In this experiment, there can be more than one factor that affects your crystal size, or the quality of your crystals and the amount of product. For example, the amount of oxalic acid added, amount of ethanol used, amongst other things. Think about the various points during the synthesis process that could have potentially affected crystal size, quality and yield. Explain how each factor might affect these.
Possible areas that could have affected the outcome of the experiment is in the addition of ethanol. The amount of ethanol added for the experiment was five mL. The more ethanol the solution contains the quicker the evaporation will occur. This evaporation gives a higher amount of low purity crystals due to its fast
