n the book 10-Minute Mindfulness the authors, S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport outline a system of approaching life with a deliberate system in order to gain a greater satisfaction out of life. The book lays out why being mindful throughout the day can bring more satisfaction, then lays out habits that can be adopted to help achieve that mindfulness. In the course of reading this book I have found that there are a lot of habits that I find that I’m already practicing. I also find that I agree with many of the tenants of this book.

In it Admiral McRaven, a Navy SEAL Commander, says,
“Making your bed will reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right you’ll never be able to do the big things right, if my chance you have a miserable day you will come home to a bed that is made. A bed made by you.” (Texas Exes) I remember this speech making me think that this was something that I needed to take time to do. When I read this section of the book I was reminded that this was an area where I wanted to improve.
In reading the section on taking a tech break I saw an area where I could improve my focus. In an article I found it talked about a different type of tech break. In the article The Amazing Power of Tech
Breaks by L.D. Rosen it lays out a system where there is an interval decided on that devices would be silenced and all attention would be given to the task at hand. Then a short break is taken to view text

Mindfulness Report messages and facebook before returning to the task at hand. The article goes on to give examples of where this system has worked. By implementing this system one would be able to be completely mindful of the task that needed to be performed.

Taking time to meticulously make your bed and pay attention to every detail. I plan to start doing this as much as I can. I often leave for work before my wife is awake and stripping the bed down to the fitted sheet on the mattress as the book outlines wouldn’t be conducive to a happy wife.
I can also see the importance of taking tech breaks. By taking the time to silence my phone and focus on time for myself or time with my family I will have a deeper connection to my family as well as have time to clear my mind and move away from the clutter that comes with constant connection. I plan to pick key times during the day to silence my phone, turn off the computer, and spend time with my family or go for a walk and enjoy the moment.
10-Minute Mindfulness has a lot of areas where I can see a need for improvement. I plan to take one or two of these areas at a time and focus on making them positive habits. By doing these things I can see how I will be able to live a healthier life mentally, and physically. I can also see how developing some of these habits will improve my family life. I was a apprehensive at first about a required reading assignment, but now am glad that I was introduced to this book and see the value that it can add to my day to day
