The client population which may be the most challenging for me to work with is differentiated by culture. Each culture has its own values and beliefs that they abide by. Counselors should be considered their clients traditions, shared values, customs, norms, history and institutions of a group of people. Counselors should be aware of other cultures understanding and concept of how they interpret their environment. It’s best to understand other cultures to see how their world is and how they function within the world. Cultures have different ways in which they respond to different situations. As stated by the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education “Culture shapes personal and group values and attitudes, including perceptions about what works and what …show more content…
When a counselor apprehends culture concepts the support systems they lack is provided. They are able to identify isolation or alienation that occurred and counselors assess the problems. From my nationality and observing other cultures, numerous of immigrants live in ethnic enclaves have many sources of social support and resources. But on the other hand, some are isolated, live distances away from family, friends, and the support systems extant in their countries of origin. I plan to use either the Culturagram LEARN Mnemonic they both break down the cultural differences. Culturagram is considered an assessment tool that helps clinicians understand culturally diverse clients and their families (Congress and Kung 2005). LEARN demonstrates listening to your client’s cultural perspective; explain the purpose of this; acknowledge client concerns of action; and negotiate a treatment plan that aids client's cultural norms and lifeways into treatment goals, objectives, and steps (Dreachslin, Gilbert & Malone,
