In the novel, The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, a young boy by the name of Matt is clone of the well respected and shriveled man by the name of El Patron. These events take place in poppy fields lying between the United States and what was once called Mexico. As Matt grows into a young boy, he faces many struggles. Even though El Patron loves Matt as he loves himself, his power-hungry family and dangerous army of bodyguards do not. Matt needs to escape in order to survive. Escape from Alacran Estate does not necessarily mean freedom, Matt still needs to strive and figure out away to escape the wrath of those who don’t approve of him. As Matt struggled to to be accepted by anyone, the death of El Patron does not help with the fact. Throughout the story, when you thought people were beginning to accept Matt, someone would screw it up for him. Matt would constantly be harassed by several different types of people, including Tam Lin who was a boy the same age as Matt, but disrespectful and somewhat childish. Matt learned how to fight back and to not let other people bring him down. Even though the story made me sad, it did impact my life quite well. The story taught to accept anyone no matter where they came from or their ethnicity. The book also taught me not judge another person on how they asct or if they are awkward around other people. Matt had many struggles throughout the story, and he stayed strong. He did not let negativity get to him, and he learned to face his fears. The story also taught me how to overcome hard times even though they are not as severe as Matt’s. The story taught me a lot of lessons, but I also made a lot of connections while reading. I have witnessed other people not accept different from them because of their race, or even the way they act. I hope I can learn from this, and if something like that experience happens in the future, I will step in and stop the confrontation. This story has taught me many new lessons and I believe that the story has caused me to turn over a new
