Homeless Job Analysis

I have realized recently that this has probably been one of the craziest, most challenging, yet most rewarding summers of my life. I would never have imagined to the extent that this job would change my viewpoint, myself, and reorient my dreams. Since the first day I walked into Campion, I felt an overwhelming sense of home, family, kinship, love. When I had signed up for this job, I thought it would be similar to my other job of tutoring kids on the weekdays. However, I was not prepared to have gone through various emotional turmoil, chaotic field trips, late night bonding with the students, and more. I see clearly now that this experience is a wholly different entity that I expected.
One of the most transformative experiences I had this summer was when one student was kicked out of the program and I felt this overwhelming sense of powerlessness to help her. She was going to a shelter for homeless kids and myself and my staff could do nothing to prevent it. We all stood in the lobby of Campion, sobbing our eyes out, while the girl tearfully said goodbye. The other kids were horrified, their worst nightmare of getting sent back to these “prison-like” shelters was very real and the girl had been like a big sister to them all. For instance, you can support each other by listening, letting them have a shoulder to cry on, or someone to talk things through with. Love is the basis of community as community is the basis for this program. I am so thankful I got to meet and connect with this many wonderful and inspiring people.
