One of the most transformative experiences I had this summer was when one student was kicked out of the program and I felt this overwhelming sense of powerlessness to help her. She was going to a shelter for homeless kids and myself and my staff could do nothing to prevent it. We all stood in the lobby of Campion, sobbing our eyes out, while the girl tearfully said goodbye. The other kids were horrified, their worst nightmare of getting sent back to these “prison-like” shelters was very real and the girl had been like a big sister to them all. For instance, you can support each other by listening, letting them have a shoulder to cry on, or someone to talk things through with. Love is the basis of community as community is the basis for this program. I am so thankful I got to meet and connect with this many wonderful and inspiring people.
