Healthcare professionals play a vital role in managing and delivering an effective healthcare system while promoting the health of their individual communities. Healthcare professionals are involved in each stage of an individual’s lifespan; from a newborn’s first well child visit to the painful process of making end of life decisions. Due to the inevitable involvement of healthcare professionals in our lives, it is only natural to want the best of them. After all, you are trusting them with your most important asset: your health.

A healthcare professional should be able to communicate clearly and effectively. He/she should be able to break down complicated medical terminologies to simple and easy to understand language. He/she should also …show more content…
Working in the healthcare field is not easy, understandably so, because it deals with very sensitive and personal aspects of a person. Patients are in their most vulnerable states as they seek care, for that reason, it is the healthcare professional’s duty to show compassion, empathy and always put the patient needs first. A healthcare professional should have a true desire to heal and not just heal patients physically but also emotionally. A healthcare professional should adopt a holistic approach to patient care. Additionally, the healthcare professional should be emotionally mature. He/she should always be able to stay calm and in control of his/her emotions no matter how out of control a situation …show more content…
The healthcare professional will have patients from various backgrounds and patients that do not speak English. To better serve these patients, the healthcare professional should familiarize him/herself with the culture and religion of the individual patient he/she is taking care of. With today’s electronic gadgets, everything is simplified, the healthcare professional has so many accessible resources to choose from in order to communicate with the patient while protecting HIPAA. There are Ipad and computer real time accessible life interpreters which are available to assist with communication. Providers can also use patient/family, or his/her own research as a source of communication. In addition, to being culturally competent, the healthcare professional should also be aware of his/her own bias. It is human nature to have deep-rooted bias against people that are different than us. As a healthcare professional, it is important that you don’t let these biases interfere with the quality of the care you provide.
