Harry Potter As An Epic Hero In Homer's Odyssey

The Odyssey by Homer tells the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who is on his journey back home after fighting in the Trojan War. His journey home takes over a decade with many troubles and tribulations. For the over a decade he had to leave his wife, son, and kingdom. Odysseus serves as the model for an epic hero. An epic hero is a brave and noble character who is both physically and mentally stronger than the average man. Though this idea comes from an ancient story, it is still relevant in modern popular culture. One example of a modern-day epic hero is Harry Potter. Harry is a hero created by J.K Rowling for the wildly popular Harry Potter series, Harry shares many characteristics with Odysseus. Harry Potter is one of the many models for the modern-day epic hero. Odysseus and Harry both have their own unique weapon, put themselves in danger for loved ones, and fight horrific creatures and wizards. Odysseus and Harry both possess their own unique weapon and are very skilled at using them. Odysseus has a hunting bow that is specially made for him while Harry has a special wand. Odysseus then creates a plan where he only loses six of his men and passes through Scylla with very few deaths. His plan shows his leadership and how he is able to overcome the toughest challenges. Harry also had to face a giant mountain troll. Many teachers and full wizards would not even attempt to fight a troll. Harry however, runs into the girl's bathroom to save Hermione by giving the troll a distraction to free Hermione. Harry is also the youngest wizard to defeat a mountain troll at only ten.
