Over the past decade, many countries have been faced with economic issues. Every country has dealt with their own crisis in their own way. It is clear that Greece is suffering greatly from the lack of action taking by the government. Sitting at close to 200 billion dollars in debt and over 25% of the population in poverty, says The New York Times. With schools and hospitals closing, the increased suicide rate and children being abandoned. A new political party has risen with some extreme views on how to fix the country’s problem. The Golden Dawn’s plan on the surface seems like a beacon of hope for Greece. Golden Dawn’s MP, Matthaiopoulos Artemios claims, “Athens is overrun with Africans, Arabs, and Asians” (Ghafour). They are actively discriminating against these groups of individuals by not allowing them to reap the benefits of the Golden Dawns food handouts, “Foreigners are barred from Golden Dawn’s Food hand-out” (Ghafour). These actions are grounds for a human’s rights case against the Golden Dawn. Therefore Golden Dawn is not eliminating problems for Greece they are creating more. The Golden Dawn uses the three million euros it receives for being an elected political party, to buy food to hand-out to only Greeks. With the unemployment rate at almost have the population and one-quarter in poverty, this seemingly kind gesture of handing out food to the poor is more like a political tactic to gain more support. The Golden Dawn buying votes by giving the people that can’t afford to buy food something to eat. The impoverished citizens are giving their support to the golden dawn just so they can put food on the table. Saying either one votes for Golden Dawn or one can feed their family, speaks to the type of individuals running Golden Dawn. These are the types of people that are not interested in making a change but rather just buying power with fruits and vegetables. This is not only an ancient way to gain power it is also very unethical and corrupt way to gain authority. Thus if the Golden Dawn were to gain power it would probably lead to more corruption and exploitation of Greece’s Citizens. While the golden Dawn’s plan is discriminatory in nature and immoral, it is also old fashioned and doomed to fail. If one looks at the root causes for World War two they will see that it was Adolf Hitler’s concept of a “Superior Race” that lead to not only problems for Germany but also millions of deaths. The ultra-nationalistic political views have already been tried and proven to be ineffective. World War two left Germany in billions of Euro in debt. This precedent proves that Golden Dawn’s idea of a Greek only Greece will not save the country like they hope but rather destroy what is left of their economy leaving them with more debt than they started with.
