With the Truman Doctrine, President Harry S. Truman established the American policy in 1847 that the United States would provide economic, political, and military assistance to all democratic nations such as Greece and potentially Turkey under threat from external forces like the Nazis or internal forces like the communist. President Harry S. Truman truly believed that by helping potential democratic government and their people, there would be a greater chance of them establishing their government and provokes others to follow in their footsteps. Furthermore, Truman showed the importance of acting fast and the consequences that can occur if the United States does not act on time by stating how in this case for Greece, if the U.S did not intervene then the government would be taken over as well as the neighboring countries such as turkey and the chances for democratic government forming again will be zero to none.
Hence the main reason this document has such an important historical significance, it was one of the first major attempts the United States did to stop the spread of communism. The United States knew that if they left Greece to fall to communism, Turkey would soon follow, and many other countries fighting for their freedom would fail.
