It is still a public health issue, with approximately 38% of U.S. adults classified as obese. Based on the article, the American population consume roughly 32% of their calories from food away from home (FAFH). FAFHs are often extremely high in calories, total fat, saturated fat, sodium and added sugars, and less desirable nutrients such as calcium and iron as compared to homemade food. That is why it is extremely important to prepare your own food rather than eating out every day. Based on the article I read, researchers have found a direct correlation between common eating out and higher calories intake, weight gaining which then lead to obesity. There are a lot of ways an obese person can cut calories. But one of the most effective way a person can have control over what he or she eats is by eating more homemade foods. I used 100% whole wheat and 100% whole grain pasta instead of the enriched one in order to increase my fiber and protein consumption. The whole grain pasta is the best one because it has extra dietary fiber and other micronutrients. I substituted the vegetable oil with coconut oil. I wanted to use extra virgin oil but I ran out it, which is why I used coconut oil. The coconut oil is somehow better than vegetable oil because “most of the saturated fat of coconut oil is made up of medium chain triglycerides”, compared to long- chain triglyceride, which are found in vegetable oils. The saturated fat in coconut oils break down easily in the body, which makes it healthier than vegetable oils. I replaced sausages and hotdogs with shrimps. As we all know, shrimp is higher in numerous vitamins and minerals for instance selenium, copper, niacin, choline, and zinc. Shrimp is also a rich source of protein and contains less saturated fat and sodium than sausages. Eating shrimp is also good for the heart due to its content of omega-3- fatty acids. Moreover, I added some veggies and herbs as well just to add flavors and make it flavorsome while I keep it low in salt. I added baby bella mushroom, bell pepper, onion and tomatoes.
