Fireworks have a few different parts such as Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal, and Sulfur and they use different chemical compounds to create three kinds of results:
A tremendous "boom"
A bright light
Heat

Black Powder is a mixture of Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal and Sulfur. The Sulfur and Charcoal act as fuels, and the Potassium Nitrate is an oxidizer.
