Scientists have discovered yet another reason to get off your chair. According to research, remaining sedentary for long periods of time can cause liver disease - so if you're reading this from your work station, now's the time to get up and move around.

The Disease and the study

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease occurs when extra fat builds up in the liver, causing possible scarring, and in certain cases, liver failure. Published in the Journal of Hepatology , the study was done in North Korea and included people around the age of 40. It was found that approximately 35,000 out of the 140,000 people who sat for 10 hours or more during the day had developed liver disease. That's 9% of the amount of people that they tested! These people are considered to be healthy otherwise, and the main problem is that they were sedentary.

Sitting for to long is a no-no

Sitting is considered abnormal to the body. Our ancestors used to constantly move, and now that homo sapiens find themselves sitting behind a desk, looking at a screen or papers, their body does not know how to adjust to it. As I pace around while writing this article, in fear I am too late to save myself, it's not too late for you. While their aren't many drugs that are FDA approved to help liver

Researchers are suggesting that 150 hours of moderate exercise a week would be a good balance to the people who can't help but sit down due to their jobs. Another way to help is to walk at least 10,000 steps everyday. This may sound like a lot, but if you pace around while working like I do, you'll be half way done by the end of the day. Then all you would have to do would be to take a walk around whichever store you're probably going to after work, and that could knock out the other 5,000 steps. If you really aren't feeling that you have time to exercise, try sitting on a Swiss ball thing, that will keep your core working for the hours that you sit on
