Abuse is Never Acceptable Emotions and abuse play a big part in abuse. By putting on a false mask, the pain is hidden from prying eyes. The woman with the black eye for not having dinner ready when the man of the house arrived home. The child with the bruises because of the irritation to the parent because of a sleepless night. The woman down the block who can’t associate with the neighbors, who is locked in a prison by day.…

The popular Showtime TV show Shameless is a dysfunction portrayal of a family living in Southside Chicago. This show has just about every dysfunctional family aspect you can imagine and it does a good job of correlating real life situations. The parents in the show, Frank and Monica Gallager, are two lowlife junkies that raised a family. Each child they created what made on Different drugs. Fiona was conceived while they were on acid, Phillip (Lip) was conceived while on mushrooms, Ian was conceived while on PCP, etc.…
Kenneth Gergen makes it really clear that he does not support the assumption that a person develops one coherent identity in the article, "In Defense of Masks." Although psychologists say it is normal, Gergen mentions the opposite, "they may experience severe emotional distress" (196). The use of multiple identities represented by masks is used, because people seek approval from others and Gergen supports this idea with how different relationships causes one to learn more about themselves. I agree with Gregen 's opinion because people change based on the people they are surrounded by when growing up and the people live more effectively with their use of masks.…
Public versus private self is something everyone experiences whether they are kept completely separate or they’re one in the same. Jodi Picoult uses this motif throughout Nineteen Minutes because it's such an essential part of everyone, it determines how people perceive one another and interact with them. An individual could be completely different from how the rest of the world views them which is shown through her characters and their situations. One of the characters josie is a great example of this very early on in the book when she explains her social life. “She understood how she was supposed to look and supposed to act… some mornings, it was hard to get out of bed and put on someone else’s smile; that she was standing on air, a fake who laughed at all the right jokes and whispered all the right gossip and attracted the right guy, a fake who had nearly forgotten what it felt like to be real.…
When creating a performance that focuses on the expressiveness of the body the actor must no longer rely on their face as their gateway to expression. By introducing a mask the actor has to stop thinking of his or her face as a focal point and instead they must represent the character feelings physically. ‘There’s a freedom that comes from putting on the mask, expressing yourself solely through your body’ (Schiffman, 2005). Mask work aims to free the actors from the pressures placed on delivering lines and instead allows them to connect with the characters on a deeper and more physical level. The ‘Neutral Mask’’ (Lecoq,2009:p39) is the perfect starting point, it is a mask without expression or characteristics and it's blank nature forces…
Lord of the Flies (Symbolism) Symbolism is present in the books we read. Symbolism develops the plot of a story and creates depth and detail to the characters. Books include symbolism that is significant to the story and pushes the story further. For example in the book, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the main characters all symbolize a trait.…
In his 1977 essay, “In Defense of Masks”, Kenneth Gergen introduces the concept of multiple personas and personalities as being ‘masks’. In his psychological and sociological research, Gergen concludes that people do not have a coherent sense of identity and need masks to be happy, healthy, and successful in society. I agree with Gergen because different situations call for different personalities; such as acting professional for a job interview, being lively with friends, or maintaining a perfect image of yourself for other. Most jobs call for a certain degree of professionalism. People put on masks while at work to give off an impression of uniformity.…
This lesson means that people are comfortable with themselves and they let the world know who they really are. It is being their unique self. In the book, The Princess Bride, Fezzik says “People in masks are not to be trusted.” (Lance). This is meaning that people need to be themselves and be unique because if someone doesn’t show who they really are, it would be hard to trust them (Lance).…
There are many reasons to mask an identity, from superheroes to indians to safety, people have always found ways to hide themselves. In Latifa’s, My Forbidden Face, Latifa is a woman crushed under the Taliban's harsh ruling. These Taliban do not allow the women to go outside of their house without a large burqa covering themselves. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ends with the death of both Romeo and Juliet. They are members of rival families who fall in love at a masked party.…
In the book, Home Is Where We Start From, written by D.W. Winnicott, he introduces the concept of true self and false self. He interprets true self as a feeling of being alive through impulsive genuine experiences. The true self is someone's "real self". Winnicott introduces false self as hiding behind a mask or putting on a protective front to hide your real self. False self can leave someone feeling abandoned and lacking spontaneity.…
One can tell that the mask is just simply a disguise. Then Dunbar says that the mask “shades our eyes”. One can be reminded of a saying “the eyes are the windows to the soul”. However, if the eyes are hidden and the face is completely covered one can not see how that person truly feels.…
Now in our society people wear mask to hide who they actually are. They are made to think that they have to be something that people would like to see them in . People are brainwashed in our society , they are made to believe that if they are different they would not be liked. People feel uncomfortable to be them selves because of the way our society thinks.
