The purpose of this exploration is to investigate how the functional groups affect the exothermic energy released by the combustion of ethane and to isolate the compound that contains the lowest enthalpy of combustion.
Introduction
The concept of burning different functional groups on ethane was based on my curiosity of the combustion of alcohols and why alcohols usually released more exothermic energy than their acid counterparts or their main carbon chain. I started comparing two of the functional groups we learned in class, the carboxyl and the hydroxyl functional groups. The thoughts, ideas and sources that surrounded the topic provided me with enough information to create several questions. I decided to use parts of the questions to formulate a single question. How does functional groups on ethane impact the exothermic energy released during the combustion of the compound?
