A graduated cylinder was used to measure 200mL of distilled water into an Erlenmeyer flask and then 40mL of 0.6 M NaOH was added to the distilled water in the flask. The flask was then plugged with a rubber stopper and shook in order to mix the solution. A buret was then washed, rinsed with distilled water, and then 5 mL of the NaOH diluted solution. After the cleansing of the buret, it was then filled up with the NaOH diluted solution. The dilution of the solution was calculated to find the molarity of the NaOH. Then the mass of a weighing dish was recorded along with 0.35 g of KHP. The mass of an Erlenmeyer flask was then weighed as well. After both flask and substance were weighed, the combined mass of the flask and substance was recorded

When a patient is suffering from Paraquat or Diquat poisoning, then the patient should not be given supplemental oxygen. This is considered a hazmat situation. The inhalation creates free radicals in the lungs, if oxygen is added to the free radicals that are already in the lungs then the chemical reaction will be increased and this could result in even more damage to the lungs. According to the NIH when they did a study, there was a “10-fold increase in mortality when paraquat is given to rats placed in 85 percent oxygen rather than air” and “ a 2-fold increase in the lethality of Diquat”.…

Titrations of a strong acid or base with a weak acid or base yield results that greatly differ then a strong-strong titration. The strong-weak titrations allow for an in depth analysis of the half-equivalence point as well as buffers. The half equivalence point allows the calculation of pH from pKa, as they are both equal at the half equivalence point, proven by the Henderson Hasslbach equation. It was Henderson in 1908 that created an equation allowing for the logarithmic calculation for pH from a buffer and the pKa which consequently lead to the knowledge and applications of buffers that we have today. Buffers were also analyzed in the experiment as buffers consist of equal molar rations of a weak acid and its conjugate base, which then…

ABSTARCT In this experiment I have compared three different methods of determining the amount (percentage) of ethanol present in an aqueous sample. I tested three different samples containing different percentage amounts of ethanol in them; Listerine, Terra Fresca Wine and the last is a mixture of ethanol and water that was made by me. The three different methods compared are the redox titration method which involves the oxidation of ethanol to ethanoic acid and then titrating the residue with sodium thiosulfate, which would then be used to calculate the number of moles of ethanol present in the original sample. The method of distillation involves heating the samples to the boiling point of ethanol causing it to evaporate from the liquid and then measuring the volume of ethanol evolved and comparing it with the original volume.…

The purpose and objective of this experiment was to determine the percent by mass of acetic acid within a sample of vinegar using volumetric analysis with the titration technique. The theory is that if the volume and molar concentration of the standardized sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution is known, then the percent by mass of the acetic acid (CH3COOH) in vinegar can be calculated after a titration.1 Within this experiment, a NaOH solution was standardized with a primary standard acid of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHC8H4O4) in order to determine the molar concentration of the NaOH solution.1 The standardized NaOH solution was then used to determine the moles, mass, and percent by mass of CH3COOH in a sample of vinegar. The vinegar used in the experiment was labeled as “Harry Potter”. The reported molar concentration of the NaOH solution was 5.42E-02 mol/L…

DETERMINATION OF pKa AND pKb USING ACID-BASE TITRATIONS Introduction Acid-base titrations can be used to determine pKa of a weak acid and pKb of a base. A weak acid and a weak base incompletely dissociate in water. For this reason, the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-) depend on equilibrium coefficients of acid (Ka) and base (Kb). Equation 1 shows the chemical dissociation equation of a weak acid. Furthermore, Equation 2 describes the equilibrium constant of a weak acid.…

Introduction Thermodynamics is the study of heat and chemical transformations as a result of energy changes, energy is what keeps things moving in our everyday life and is applied to nearly everything to a point where knowledge of thermodynamics is common sense weather we know it or not. Now a days every household, car, office and even laptops and electronics have air conditioning which has allowed for appealing aspects of commercial use and consumer consumption, but what we don 't consider is how it uses heat, and the absence of heat to facilitate the exothermic and endothermic reactions to do work. Air conditioning controls humidity, ventilation and temperature, creating a fresh ambiance in warmer weather. It requires scientific topics which…
