When a patient is suffering from Paraquat or Diquat poisoning, then the patient should not be given supplemental oxygen. This is considered a hazmat situation. The inhalation creates free radicals in the lungs, if oxygen is added to the free radicals that are already in the lungs then the chemical reaction will be increased and this could result in even more damage to the lungs.
According to the NIH when they did a study, there was a “10-fold increase in mortality when paraquat is given to rats placed in 85 percent oxygen rather than air” and “ a 2-fold increase in the lethality of Diquat”. With this knowledge, the administration of supplemental oxygen to a patient with these substances in their lungs would only be beneficial if the patient
