Exhale: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Inhale...exhale...inhale...exhale. Ginormous feet thundered behind me. How close was this monster? How close was this despicable beast? Was it huge and scary? Oh no, but it's legs were strong and powerful and the endurance this monster had made it hard to stay ahead. Thump...thump...thump. My racing heart matched the beat of this monster's feet. I had worked and ran and pushed myself too much to give it up now because this is where it counted. I didn't want to be left out of the pack or have people think that even the best isn't good enough. Oh I could already see the bright and shiny gold trinkets that hung around others neck. I could already see the gleaming look of proudness in our leaders eyes and the slight disappointment on their face …show more content…
The last bend the last straightaway until we would reach the end. The question was, who will reach it first? The snarling monster was close behind me. I could hear it's heavy breaths and I could feel it's fury pouring out. But the desperation and want to win just wasn't there. The spark that kept the beast going had left. There was nothing special there anymore. Winning was nothing new to the monster. But me, I had it left, and it was more alive than ever. I refused to accept, "almost there" or, "so close." Those words were my life story. Oh sure I have a couple of those shiny, bright necklaces at home but this...this was different.
The world around me went dark. I could vaguely hear the birds chirping and screeching louder and louder. But, it was like the whole world had been sucked into a black hole and I was the only survivor. The monster had faded away, it was in the past because now, it was all me. My arms cut through the chilly May breeze and my eyes become fierce. My legs reached for the end and my heart ached for that beautiful medal.
One step, STOMP, and it was over. The world around me went back to normal and the monster was down on the ground, defeated and worn out. A feeling of accomplishment and pure happiness flooded my heart. This was what I had worked for for two years and nothing had ever felt so rewarding. I cheerfully accepted my place on the winners podium...even if it was in 6th

The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and I couldn’t stop despite the fact that my lungs felt as if there were icy shards lodged in my chest. Haunted figures of the men that destroyed my life as I knew it flashed before my eyes as I lept over crates and pushed down trash cans behind me, my path marked by a riddled maze of rotted food and old possessions. The tears in my eyes were no longer tears, but streaks of moisture…

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…

My music had somehow gotten through to the creature and made it aware of my situation. It urged me onto its back and I gave in without protest. Then all at once, it took off with amazing speed toward some direction I could not see in the darkness. I had to violently grab hold of the mane on its back much like one does when riding a wild horse. For hours it seemed the beast rushed on with no clear end in sight through the forest of darkness.…

The screams got louder as we came to a screeching halt. I quickly jumped off of Tripp's back as I saw a huge figure running towards us at an unrealistic speed. My first thought was that it was a huge gorilla or ape. Unfortunately, it was worse. Tripp told me to take a step back as I saw Coach Moore running full speed ahead right at us.…

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, we're all accustomed to a certain standard, or stereotype that needs to be played. Whether it's being captain of the cheerleading team or the smartest kid in your class, it's one way or another that's there's going to be someone who's supposed to follow by these stereotypes or standards just for the sole fact that that's them. Unfortunately for me, it couldn't get any worse, since being an African American female who unfortunately does not fit your typical, "angry black woman." Yes, that "angry black woman", bitter, closed-off, unarticulated, with serious father issues.…

The pungent stench of decaying flesh overwhelmed her senses. Birds sang in harmony above, oblivious to the horrifying scene below. She stared blankly at the scene in front of her, trapped deep in her thoughts, devoid of all emotion. The birds song mutated into a piercing ring, sending a painful ache across her forehead. Snapping out of her thoughts, she stumbled back to reality, bare skin scraping against the rough bark of the surrounding trees.…

The silent screams that bellow from my soul. I'm yelling at the top of my lungs, but you can't hear me. You don't see the pain behind the smile, all you hear is the laughter through the pain, and no matter how many times I tell you I'm fine; you believe me. I just want to yell at the top of my lungs and say “Why should I even bother with love if no one will ever love me or the body I possess?” I didn't choose this face.…
