The last bend the last straightaway until we would reach the end. The question was, who will reach it first? The snarling monster was close behind me. I could hear it's heavy breaths and I could feel it's fury pouring out. But the desperation and want to win just wasn't there. The spark that kept the beast going had left. There was nothing special there anymore. Winning was nothing new to the monster. But me, I had it left, and it was more alive than ever. I refused to accept, "almost there" or, "so close." Those words were my life story. Oh sure I have a couple of those shiny, bright necklaces at home but this...this was different.
The world around me went dark. I could vaguely hear the birds chirping and screeching louder and louder. But, it was like the whole world had been sucked into a black hole and I was the only survivor. The monster had faded away, it was in the past because now, it was all me. My arms cut through the chilly May breeze and my eyes become fierce. My legs reached for the end and my heart ached for that beautiful medal.
One step, STOMP, and it was over. The world around me went back to normal and the monster was down on the ground, defeated and worn out. A feeling of accomplishment and pure happiness flooded my heart. This was what I had worked for for two years and nothing had ever felt so rewarding. I cheerfully accepted my place on the winners podium...even if it was in 6th
