#2 –– Distinguish between partisan and nonpartisan elections of judges. Is one type of election better than another? Why or why not? Partisan elections simply refer to a public voting for specific offices. Each candidate typically represents a specific party, primarily Republican or Democrat.…
In recent discussions of third party campaigns, a controversial issue has been whether third parties hurt the presidential campaign. On the one hand, some argue that they help get the people’s concerns be heard to the two major parties. On the other hand, however, others argue that it ends up having the focus away from other problems. In sum, then, the issue is if voters are better off with more choices or that third parties are unnecessary. While some believe that voting for third parties divide the country in a way that hurts us, third party candidates can be useful as they push the people’s views onto the two major parties.…
In the United States the president is elected not through direct-popular vote nor through congress but instead through the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a very unique and complex way to elect a head of state. There are two stages of a presidential election, the first stage is the primaries. During the primaries candidates are campaigning to be the party nomination and represent their party affiliation.…
During most controversial topics, people tend to favorite one side without hearing an opposing view. Growing up in a predominantly white high school and college for Kailegh Tinnin and myself, only gave us unanswered questions about our society when it came to racial discussions. Why do we live in a world that acts negative without a discussion when someone disagrees with our opinions? Kailegh had racial slurs directed at her in high school.…
Conservatives and liberals are more a less disparate from one another, not including employment speculations. The vast majority of all Republicans live in more rural, bucolic areas, including Randolph County, North Carolina. The Republican Party is also classified as the Grand Old Party (GOP), or the Gallant Old Party (GOP). The winner of the 2016 Presidential election was a Republican (Donald Trump), and the majority of the current House of Representatives is also Republican. The Republicans hope to solve the current problems that America is facing today in what they believe in and how they should be solved.…
The Republican Party and the Green Party are very different from each other. Republican Party became the more conservative of the two major parties, Republicans feel that government’s role is to regulate and oversee morality. The Green Party is a democratic organization where the platform is based upon "environment first, development second”. Each party has completely different opinions on many issues including ones that I feel are important. Civilian Gun Control, Capital Punishment and Legalization of Same Sex Marriage.…
A democracy is a government that is ruled by the people. This means that we as people choose our own presidents, mayors, senators, and other people of power. A democracy is different from other forms of government because it is actually “ran” by the people. Its main purpose is to not be a monarchy which is a government that is led by a monarch like a queen or king, where the power stays in the family. The Electoral College was founded in 1787 by our founding fathers, It was established to make sure that our government doesn't turn into a monarchy.…
Imagine sitting at a table and drafting a document that is going to govern and choose the United Stated president every four years for the rest of history. In 1787, the values and thoughts of those men were about fairness and a balance of government that they had not found being under British rule. Now as a citizen of the United States, we go into booths and either press a button or mark with a pencil who we would like to be our president or at least that is what we think. The actual process of electing the president is handled by a group of individuals elected by our citizens that cast a vote based on what we as citizens mark in that booth. We can all agree that while it was fair and balanced with 13 states in 1787, we may need to relook…
Electoral College Alternative The Electoral College is a voting system that was put into place by our founding fathers in the constitution. The Electoral College has 538 electors and out of those electors, 270 votes are needed to win an election (National Archives and Records Administration 1) . Most Americans dislike the Electoral College and what it stands for, being that Americans feel their votes do not count. If there were alternative ways for people to cast their votes, whether that be change the whole system, vote differently or even to tamper with the current system, Americans would be much happier.…
We the people. This phrase was created to give the people of the United States of America freedom. Freedom to choose, to express how they feel, and the right to vote without the British or unjust governments getting in their way. The right to vote is one that has been fought for for a long time, going over the fact of racial discrimination and gender indifference, when the people vote they expect that the majority vote of their country to be upheld. The Electoral College is in dire need of a morally right change to the people's power to decide by popular vote.…
The Republican Platform’s Views on Three Topics There are two main platforms in politics in the United States with third parties in the mix. After taking two quizzes that determined their results bases on asking questions on current issues, I was matched to the Republican National Committee at 43% (45% for social issues and 40% for economic issues). I had a 38% rating for the Democratic National Committee (with a 35% for social issues and 40% for economic issues) and a 5% rating for the Green Party (with 0% for social issues and 10% for economic issues). The Republican Platform matched my views on three issues in the United States, dealing with the present-day restriction of religion in schools, the current Education system, and the Illegal Immigration problem.…
A democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people, and the United States claims to have the freest and most democratic in the world. In fact, many consider the American democracy to be a shining beacon of freedom, more so than any other nation on earth. Yet, upon closer examination of the U.S. presidential election process, this claim begins to deteriorate. Due to the founding fathers’ distrust in the ability of average voters to choose a president, they created the Electoral College: a system through which each state is given a number of electors based on its number of members in Congress. State legislatures choose a set of electors who later convene to cast votes for president.…
Participation in Politics: Is Compulsory Voting the Answer to Low Voter Turnout? Every few years, the concept of compulsory or mandatory voting appears on United States politicians’ radar as a solution to increasing voter turnout. Following the 2014 midterm elections, when only 33.9 percent of eligible voters cast ballots, President Obama threatened to make voting compulsory via an executive order (DelReal). This announcement by the president brought the idea to the forefront of American politics once again, and constitutional scholars quickly responded, claiming compulsory voting laws violate the rights of United States citizens (von Spakovsky).…
In today’s modern democracy, political parties and interest groups play a huge projecting role in the United States government and it is rising quickly. Political parties and interest groups are organized groups of people who work towards specific goals within the government, promoting politicians and raising money to help accomplish certain needs. While yes, both groups are working towards similar goals they often times serve different purposes within the country’s political system. The real question is whether or not either of these groups are helping improve America or if they are helping to diminish the American political system. The most familiar group known amongst people around the country is the idea of political parties.…
Third-Party Voting Is Not An Option More than any election before, voters want a viable third-party candidate. We have third-party candidates, of course, but none of them are going to win. The system of government we have set up completely blocks any third-party candidate from even having a chance of winning. Even candidates that aren’t a third party candidate and win the majority vote, Al Gore, for example, aren’t guaranteed to win. In 2000, Al Gore won the majority vote for most states, but because of the electoral college, Bush won the election overall.…
